Subject: Using stock airhat for DIY intake IP: Logged
Message: Okay, I've ready enuff about fab'ing a cold intake system and I've already started gathering the necessary materials. I have a 96 SLT and I'm thinking of buying a used 97 intake plenum which I've read here works for a 96. But,has anyone successfully used the stock airhat for a DIY intake? I've looked over Home Depot for anything that might marry a round 3" PVC elbow to the rectangular intake tube on the hat but no luck. I figure I'd ask before buying the newer plenum.
Thanks!

Message: Don't use PVC, use the black ABS pipingor the rubber Fernco. People here have told me that the PVC breaks down under the high heat of the engine bay.

Message: I have a 94 v-6 and did use a 97- up air hat. from the hat I went to the local rice shop and got a 45 silicone elbow and a piece of 3" stainless tubing. cut the tube so the air filter will be right up against the grill. On the air hat, it has some ribs inside of it, cut them off. Other then that the set up works great!! one more thing, that piece on the grill that looks like an air channel, take it of and dump it!!

Message: Thanks for the input. But what I'm looking for is info on connecting the new intake assembly to a stock 96 airhat that has a rectangular intake opening. I'm thinking anything pliable that can squish into a rectangular shape as well as be heat resistant, etc. would be perfect.
Thanks!

Message: I have a 96 SLT 3.9 as well and tried the exact same thing the other day. No luck. I ordered the 97 air hat from the dealer, but most junk yards have em cheaper. Its your best bet. It channels the air into the TB much better anyway.
