I just got a price qoute from ACPT on a custom, Composite Drive Shaft for my truck. Get ready for this, they can do it, it would only take 2 weeks, and the cost is Approx. $1000.00 BAWA HA HAAA...
Any takers ???? It won't be me for that price.
Check it out http://www.acpt.com/driveshaft/index.html

Yep, I'm checking Aluminum also. They are a LOT cheaper, and there are a lot more places that can do aluminum shafts. My Dad just got one for his '29 Ford Street Rod. I'll report back on the cost as soon as I get it.

Know what sucks big bootie? Us guys with the ClubCab and a 5-spd have a two-piece driveshaft with the carrier bearing that rides on one of the cross-members of the frame. Ever price one of those jokers in aluminum? Silly, I tell you. Silly.

So we're pretty much stuck with a stock two piece. The mechanical engineer that owns the driveshaft shop here in ATL told me that I couldn't cenvert to a one piece because it would be too long. Once you get to 6000 rpm with a .79 overdrive, the forces are too much and it would start to wobble like a long piece of rebar. No good there, huh?

My 2000 QC 4.7 auto 355 gears has a one peace aluminum drive shaft and with 15 inch tires I turn 2350rpms at 70mph.
In 2001 they went to 16 inch tires to try to get the mpg to what the sticker said.
Can some one else post what rpms they turn at 70mph and 16 inch tires with 355 gears and Auto, I also have tire and handling with P255/65R15.
I think the QC and CC have the same wheel base.

Thanks Rick. I was beginning to think I had a freak. My '99 is a CC 5.2/auto and has a 1 piece aluminum drive shaft. I wonder why they put steel in the 5 speeds? I understand what the engineer said but why the single piece aluminum vs. 2 piece steel from 5 sp. to auto? Can't help you with the rpm because I have 3.92 and 15 inch wheels.

So if the QC has a one piece aluminum driveshaft why does the CC have a 2-piece? Aren't these trucks the same length?

CThomp, it must have something to do with the 5 speed tranny. My CC does have the 1 piece aluminum drive shaft.

The 5-spd is shorter in overall length than the auto tranny. If the auto tranny was any shorter in length (thus making the driveshaft longer), the driveshaft would probably be a two piece as well. I think all the older Gen III CC trucks (prior to '99) may have had two piece shafts, but I am not sure. i am also pretty sure than all the old gen II CC trucks had two-piece shafts. Apparently the auto tranny housing is long enoug to allow them to get away with a single peice aluminum shaft. If you can get to the dealer and crawl under a truck or two (if there's a 5-spd and an auto side by side) you'll be able to see the difference. The tail shaft on the auto comes almost all the way back to the first frame cross-member. The 5-spd is much shorter.

Oh well. Guess I'm just envious that you guys even have the option to get a carbon-fiber shaft etc.

Can cranking the torsion bars on a 2000 Dakota cause damage to the front drive shaft.

I got 2 inch blocks rear, and cranked the torsion bars to get some height up front (December/02)
About 2 weeks ago I started getting growling type noise by the firewall area, turns out that I need to replace Front Drive Shaft (covered by warranty thank god)

I don't mean to throw a wrench in your wheel, but my 5.2 auto has one of those silly 2 piece steel ones... I would love to switch to one of the aluminum ones... One thing I was wondering was could you just remove the crossmember that the carrier bearing attaches to and just run the full length aluminum one... if the R/T's run them and there are some people running 4.10 or 4.56 gears then there shouldn't be a problem with the rpm bending it... Plus if a good shop makes an aluminum one they will provide a different wall thickness and diameter for different apps.... I would not hesitate to run one...

I know this tread is old as all get out but this is
all that popped up when i searched for a 2 piece
driveshaft for my Dakota. I have a 99 Dakota 5.2 CC
with a 1 piece driveshaft. Steel at that .. But i am
also a 4x4 . However i would love to switch to a 2
piece shaft to get my driveshaft up at another angle
. It is the first thing that hits the rocks when i
am wheeling.. I have gone through 4 driveshaft's in
the past 2 years because its 69.5 inches long ..
What years are the 2 piece shafts in ?
