Subject: Changing ratios on a 4x4

Hey guys had a good Christmas I hope. I am
looking to change my gear ratios in my 2000
4x4 CC sport. I want to move from 3.55 to 3.90
or 92 to get a little better takeoff with these
31's. Since the new ratio also uses a 11 tooth
pinion, can I just buy the new ring gear? Also,
since it's a 4x4, I have to do the front also, are
you guy's aware that in 2000 Dodge went to a
new front diff with 8" ring? Supposedley, new
gears are available for this diff only from
Chrysler and they are EEExpensive.

You should always change a ring and pinion as a set,I dont even think you can buy one without the other,ya the front diff is a corporate 205mm and your right no aftermarket gears yet,I would wait for someone to come out with 4:10 gear sets for front and rear

I checked with Randy's Ring & Pinion about a week ago. They only came up with factory parts for the front, which limits you to 3.90 front & rear. Their prices ran as follows:

$375 for front gears
$199 for rear gears
$194 for front and rear master overhaul kits for front and rear (new bearings and I'm not sure what else)

$768 parts total, plus shipping and installation at the shop of your choice, so figure in the ballpark of $1200-$1400 total. One local 4X4 shop gave me an estimate of about $1250 parts and labor.

Ouch.

Dan,

Yeah, Randy's was where I got the info. I can
do the work myself, that's not a prob. But, 375
for a front gear set is a rip! I will be much more
attentive to gear ratio on my next truck.

Man, I'd really like to raise my gear ratio from 3.55 since I have added the 33's. I really miss the torque I had with stock tires, light to light 4x4 sleeper:) Even with that, I can't go back to smaller tires, she looks too good so I'll wait for non-factory gears to be available at a reasonable price and swap then.

One option would be to go to a junkyard and try and get a set of axles off of a rolled truck.

Demon,

Yeah, I have sourced a couple of sets from salvaged trucks. I believe I will do that next. My new Trac-loc should be here soon, but it's pointless to put it in if I don't have my rear gear set, and if I buy my rear gear set, it's pointless to put it in until I get my front gear set or else I can't use my 4wd in this upcoming snowstorm! Soooo,,, I guess it's all or nothing.

Thanks,
Wade

Whats amazing is that going from 3:55 to 3:92 is 1,000 lbs more in tow capacity than with the 3;55 gears.

Ive got a 2000 Quad Cab 4x4 with the 5.9/360. Ive been wanting to change the gear ratio but im having probs. First, what kind of axles do I have in front and in back and what gear ratios are in them. And if i keep the car in 2WD for 90% of the time, I dont understand why you have to change gears in front if i change the rear gear ratio?
Thanks

If you changeout the back gears only, you will
damage something eventually. It depends on
how much of a change you make. I read on
Randy's R-P that the ratios must be within 1%
of eachother. In my truck the x-fer case does
not incorporate a center diff (like full time
4x4's, read "Grand Cherokee") so when in 4x4,
the front and back drive shafts are locked
together which means they will spin at the
same speed. If the front and rear diff's have
different ratios, the wheels will want to spin at
different speeds. You're either going to be
dragging the slow wheels, spinning the fast
wheels, or something will break in your front
driveline (weaker). In a full time unit, i think the
center diff will slip the difference and the first
thing to go will be the limited slip mechanism.
I want to say you have 8" gears in front and
81/4" in back. But, I think I remember
somewhere that the rear is bigger if you have
the 5.9l, actually I think it is the driveshaft
diameter that is different, Anybody ? I've
learned that the ratio's are labeled with a tag
hanging from the axle tube if it's not worn off
yet. Your sales sticker should have it too.

Making progress,

"Shep" from drivetrain.com explained to me
that that new "corporate" axle on the front of
the 2000 and up Dakotas is just a specialized
Dana 35 IFS front end and uses a dana 35
diff. I was a little confused but I checked the
numbers he told me to on the metal tags and
it does appear he is talking about my front diff.
He did some investigating and found that the
3.92 ratio is available as a special order
directly from Dana -Spicer. For roughly $265
plus shipping, he sold me the gear set which
comes with minor rebuild kit including crush
sleeve and oil seal. So so far I have all my
parts for my 4x4 gear ratio change with trac loc
upgrade, and I have spent: $265 for front gear
set and rebuild kit, $45 for rear rebuild kit, $48
for rear gear set (used), 230 for the new oem
trac loc lsd, for a parts total of roughly $588. By
the way, Drivetrain has the traclocs for 8.25"
rear ends for like $230 new, check them out if
your interested.

Well, It's been awhile, but I finally made the change. I decided to have my mechanic do the gear change since the front housing has to be stretched and the steering gear disassembled. Turns out the parts I bought for the front diff were Wrong! But, my mechanic was able to get the corporate 8" 3.92 ring and pinion shipped overnight. Gonna cost me another couple hundred though. He originaly said he would do the change for $600 which puts me at $1188 (including $230 for trac-loc upgrade). But now that I had to buy the corporate 8" r&p, I'm up to about $1388. How does it drive? I can say that with this ratio, the truck now feels perfect. Dodge is stupid to even let you have a 4x4 CC V6 with large wheel package and 3.55's, and mine is a 5sp. I can't imagine what a slug it would've been with auto. It feels much stronger now.

Sooo, anybody wanna buy my 3.55's from me?

Out of a 2000 4x4 Dakota CC with V6 5 spd (low mileage):

3.55 ratio rear 8.25" r&p
3.55 ratio front C205 (corporate 8") r&p
rear 8.25" open case carrier.

$200 for everything?
