Subject: 4 barrel carbs for a 87 3.9L V6?

Message:
does anyone know if the stock carb that came on the 87 3.9L V6's was a single or dual barrel?

Any 4 barrel carbs that will work on my Dak? Would it degrade the MPG by much?

I am quite sure that it is a holley 2bbl carb. If you can find a manifold a 390cfm holley 4bbl will work well with the 3.9. Shouldn't really degrade MPGs that much if you keep your foot out of it. I think edlbrock makes or made a manifold for your application.

I have an 87 Dakota, equipped with a 3.9liter.
Tried the 390cfm with the matching mopar performance manifold, did not like it. I found that the two-barrel performed the same, if not better. Also tried the Holley Projection system with the four-barrel manifold, same results.

I found that the mopar performance ignition system, along with a holley non-O2 feed back OEM carburetor from an 83-84 Chrysler 5TH Ave worked 100% better that the four-barrel set up.

Tinker all you want with the four-barrel, you won't get the performance that you are expecting.

I currently have the original factory two barrel carburetor and manifold on the engine(got sick of tinkering with the four-barrel crap), but installed the mopar performance race ported heads, a 1998 magnum roller lifter cam shaft that I had to machine to match the oil galleries of the stock 1987 factory cam. Had to install an inline electric fuel pump as I lost the eccentric mount for the mechanical fuel pump from the cam swap. I also installed the 1998 magnum exhaust manifolds (had to plug the heated cross over ports on the heads, but well worth the effort)along with the complete factory stainless steel exhaust system from a 1998 model year. I removed the air pump (sorry emission freaks, but I performed a emission test and the CO, NOX, and HC readings all were border line zeros. It passed the government Drive Clean test).

I am looking for the best way to upgrade a carburated 3.9 dakota. I have turboed things before but am wondering if there is a turbo kit available or any other things people have found to get more performance out of it.
thanks a lot

i put a mister gasket 2 to 4 adapter on my 87. got a 390 and threw a 4.5 power-valve in it. hooked the ignition computer vacuum to distributor port. timed by ear, advance till it pings a half throttle acceleration, and back off about 4 degs. its a blast to drive now. spins tires, 40 to 70 quick, gas gauge seem slow enough, and a old 87 Dakota 4x4.
