Subject: custom intake or FIPK IP: Logged
Message: I have a custom intake and want to know if it is as good, worse, or better than a FIPK. It consists of a 4" cold-air tube mounted on the front of the factory air box (it is sealed, mounted solid, and takes in cool, outside air only: no engine compartment air), factory air box with K&N filter, and factory ducting and air hat (with S-bolt and baffle removed from inside of air hat). This setup seems to work just fine, but if the FIPK is considerably better, I would consider getting it. I like my setup for that fact that it takes outside air only, and it still remains quiet. I understand that the FIPK is rather noisy when the throttle is mashed. Is this correct? I had a K&N cone filter on a different vehicle before and it was loud and vibrated. The sound was cool for a while, but become quite irrating after hearing all of the time. I know FIPK people will swear theirs is better, but I would appreciate some honest opinions. Thanks!!!

Message: I like the idea of a "custom" setup, especially
after you've used it and like it. But, if I had
to spend any money on a cold air setup, I'd say
get the StageIII from Intense Performance (ok,
I did). It has a reusable filter like K&N. It's
a nice setup and costs less. Since I have the
exact vehicle you have (maybe not if you don't
have the Garnet paint), you'll have to bend one
of the A/C lines out of the way to squeeze the
3" intake through to the front grille.

Message: Koz,
Do they have a website where I can look at this product? I have a white Sport Plus. We do have the same powertrain however. Thanks for your input.

Message: Koz,
Did you notice any power increases? Major or minor, and at what rpm range? Does this setup roar when you get on the gas? Thanks.

Message: There's no roar because it is a sealed system.
This was my first mod and I noticed some power
increase, but mainly these things:
- improved throttle response
- less knock on 87 oct
- improved mileage
I've done no real performance tests beyond my own
feelings. I didn't fall for the classic, "Oh, I
just got my first mod, so I'll start rat-racing
around town!" I kept my driving style consistent
and think I made a reasonable comparison.
I'm not sure if you're going to notice much, since
you've already got the homemade setup. BTW, I did
convert from a K&N filter (sitting right where the
factory hat sits) to the Stage-III, so it wasn't
just a clean jump from the factory restricted air
box.

Message: A slight knock on 87 oct is perfectly normal.
My source for that piece of information is my
owner's manual. Like I said, that cold air
intake took away most of it. This made sense
to me since it seemed like the knocking was
worse in the summer when the car was in O/D
at low speeds.

Message: Mine was knocking under hard throtle. I changed the oil and in pretty much went away. I still use 89 octane.
