hi all....i have a 00 4.7, quick question

im not sure if this is a problem or not, i just noticed it tonight.

is it normal for your oil pressure to settle down to 40 (on the gauge) when you are at idle? mine was doing that tonight. no rough riding, no apparent problems, and as soon as i got going it jumped right back up. just wondering if this is an ok thing.

thanks for the help.

Yes that is perfactly normal. 40 psi at idle is more than enouph. I think minimum spec is like 6 psi at idle.

Most factory oil pressure gauges lie , Dodge decided to tell the truth on the gauge and alot of people think the idle oil pressure drops lower than any other car or truck they have ever owned , when in fact the gauges on most cars and trucks are slow to react and read 20psi and 50psi the same .Put a good gauge on a Ford or a Chevy and you will be shocked at what the dash gauge has been telling you.In the summer when oil temp will go above 200 degrees your oil pressure may be at 20psi at idle and this is normal.

I am going to go down to my truck and get the service manual and bring it up.It is a 2001 service manual but it should be pretty close. I need to check something another poster mentioned about lose susepension bolts. The rule of them in the engine design world is 25-35 psi at idle and an additional 10 psi for every 1000 rpms. This was worked out by engineirs on both sides of the globe shortly after WWII. Their is one major domestic car manufacture that I am aware of that does not follow this rule and allows 6-8 psi as normal at idle.

group # and page # 9-138 2001 4.7

curb idle (4 psi) min

@ 3000 rpm (25-110 psi) min

Remember that these are miniums not optimum levels.
