Message: Hey guys,
I was looking around the internet and found an Airaid Cold-Air intake system for the 4, 6, or 8 cylinder Dakotas. I have a 2001 3.9L CC Dak and was looking to put one of these on it. Has anybody used or heard anything about an Airaid system? I have heard from others that if you simply put the cold-air intake on it can burn up parts of your engine. Is that true? Also, the company claims an 11 H.P. increase once installed. They are selling them for $200. Does that sound about right? Thanks.

Message: This is just my opinion: I think the Air Raid is way overpriced. For a few dollars more you could go to Speedtweaks.net and order a K&N FIPK, which is pretty much the best intake available for our engines. The kit for the 5.9 (57-1509) will fit the 3.9. For around the $150 mark, you could get a 360 airintakez, an Intense Performance or Quick D - plus they do away with the accordian tube that comes off the TB hat (the air raid uses it). Just my .02¢

Message: Thanks for the input. I think I will save my money for the time being. The snow is supposed to really start flying here next week and I couldn't really get my Dakota out and really test the difference if I put one of these on in the snow, so I will wait until next spring to see what everyone is offering. Thanks again for the info.

Message: I have been putting together a home brew intake and it is real easy to do. There are a few others out there that have 90 degree bends in them, but I took those out and use just a 45 degree and it increased the milage and power more. I would do it now, you know you want to. The K&N will be the biggest cost at around $35 the rest is only about $10 to $20. Look at this post

Message: I still am not sure what I will do, wait or do something now. One question i still have is, will simply putting an intake burn up anything in my engine? On another thread somebody told me that by putting in an intake and not updating the computer chip that I would burn out the valves in my engine. True/False? Thanks.

Message: In another thread they talk about the 4.7 having a learning computer, so it should figure that out. I also read that you can reset the computer by unkooking the battery for more then 30 minutes and it should start fresh and learn the new air volume. I am guessing here but it makes sense.

Message: i personally have the Airaid on my 97 3.9 and I got it for about 150 bucks. It adds a lil power and a lil sound. I think I bought the thing before I found this site so I did not know a lot about all the choices out there. If i got one today I would probably get the K&N, the Quick D or the Intense Performance. Or if you're on a budget just make one!

Message: #57-1509 for the 5.9 will fit, sometimes the heat shield needs to be bent a little. And no, nothing in your engine will burn up. Your computer (PCM) will re-learn the changes and adjust itself according ly. Or, you can help it along by re-setting it yourself after installing the intake. Disconnect the negative battery terminal, then turn the ignition to on, but not starting the engine.
