Subject: apexi afc controller. ricey but useful IP: Logged
Message: http://www.apexi-usa.com/electronics_safc.asp
has anyone tried to use one of these? with the problem of chips being useless right know one of these could prove useful.
I know there are contours/cougars with these things as well as cavaleirs, neons, mustangs(out of place) and anything on the import scene.
Besides the fact that they look cool(in my opinion) they have been dyno proven to add 10+ on any dyno tuned set up I have seen.
CHECK IT OUT 8 user programable points. to those that can set your timing this is especially useful.

Message: Don't bother with it. I had sent them the schematics and sensor pinouts to Apexi about 9 months ago. They spent 2 months trying to get their box to work with the Dodge MAP based (Speed Density) system and couldn't get it to work. ($10,000 to "redesign" the box to work with out applications.)
What you have to remember is that those systems (Ford, GM, Import) are mostly Mass-Air (MAF)systems...not MAP. It's much harder to get them to work on our systems.

Message: by the way, this is very popular with the import world, and is very useful. Will it work? I have no idea...lemme do some research on it

Message: my impression from people I know that use themis that they work better with map sensors.
there must be some snag in the wiring somewhere. another sensor we don't have or or pcm might reject the changes.
I will be researching. how about a FEILDS, or HKS fuel controller

Message: i don't know, i just checked the wiring and the whole install, and it should work. I would like to know why Bernd says it won't work. Basically you need a MAP or MAF sensor and a TPS, those are the two main inputs. It learns the voltage that each puts out, so it looks like it should work. They only list imports because that is what they target, but thats not to say it wont work on other cars.

I assume cutting the wireing harness voids the warrenty

check these out from hks. much cheeper and might be all that is needed for a dak 1.0 adjustment of a/f ratio rich/lean I don't honestly know if the dak needs much adjustment
the super afr looks good not as pretty but, might work better. rather use the afr-type d or the afr-type L if they will work because of the price.

Message: actually I would go with the Apex over those. those are actually pretty expensive for what they do. The APEX is much more flexible and a better way to tune fuel delivery

Message: I recently read that the 4.7dak runs an air to fuel ratio of 11to 1 in 1st threw 3rd gear and then14.7 in 4th. is this true? would the engine really run that good with such a rich ratio.

Message: OK, bringin this back up from the dead.
I have installed the AFC on my neon...supposedly Apexi says it cant be done..but HUNDREDS..if not thousands of neons have them.
Hook up these wires.
-ignition
-2 grounds
-TPS
-o2
-cut the MAP wire and hook a wire to each.
umm thats it..
So..years later...anyone have one on there dakota yet?

Message: i am NOT an electronics whiz.. but...
a year or so before i came into the military, everyone was running a cheap mod called various things, usually the "iat adjuster". from what i can understand, anyone with a basic knowledge of wiring diagrams can put it together with $10 worth of radio shack parts. a bud of mine put me one together. its a 1"x3" box that i mounted in my garage remote compartment of my overhead console. has a switch marked "iat normal" and "iat bypass" spliced into the factory intake air temp sensor, flip the switch to "iat bypass", and you can literally dial in (values determined by what size resistors you use in it) what temperature your PCM sees that the incoming air is at, effectively changing your air/fuel mixture. I know it works because when i flip the switch and turn the dial to 30 degrees farenheit (mine is adjustable from 30-160), the air fuel guage goes all the way rich, and stays there, no matter the throttle input. Since ive come back to the world.... i dont hear much about it at all.... is this what you guys are trying to acomplish with the apexi set-up?... yeah, its crude. but it works.

Message: Kinda, but a bit more.
You can pick RPM points, and hi and low throttle points and remove and add fuel at those points.
Can be very handy....
If you get the V-AFC....the one for the v-tec civics....it can be used to control something else....like say....nitrous...Hehehe.

Message: If you're gonna spend the money on a MAP tweaking box, you should at least get one that controls both timing and fuel. Modifying the MAP for WOT fuel while ignoring timing is not the best approach, IMO. You end up with some odd looking dyno graphs on the ones I've seen.

Message: I would avoid the fields unit, I had one that went tits up on me (would cause random codes and at times would shut my car off completely). I know of a lot of people who have had issues with them.
The apex unit is nice, A little more expensive but it does the job of adding/removing fuel. I was able to get my air/fuel ratio to about 12.0:1(+/- .02) across the board (once in boost). I know where you can find the apex units used for a decent price ($150 or so)
