Subject: 5.3L beat my 4.7L IP: Logged
Message: Me: 01 quad cab 4.7L, auto, 3.55 g/r, z-tube, & jet chip
My friend: 01 extened cab chevy silverado 1500, 5.3L, auto, 3.42 g/r, k&n fipk, hypertech programmer.
He beat me 3 out of 3 times racing (very unpolpulated area) he didn't beat me by much, but HE STILL WON! any ideas what in the hell i could do to win next time? i just ordered the 70mm throttle body with the bigger z-tube and i am looking at putting 3.92 gears in.

A good head start of just a second or less can give him a good truck length. Try switching trucks and see the outcome.

Message: it was about 1/4 mile, maybe a little less. we took off at the same time (at least as far as the naked eye could tell) and he lead the whole race every time. maybe i just suck at racing. i dont see how it could be driver error though, i said go, and we both took off, simple as that.

Message: A good brake torque can save you 1/2+ sec. on your 0-60 mph times . Put your left foot on the brake and your right foot on the gas (open the throtle about 3/4 , just before wheel spin)then lift off the brake and slowly open the throtle the rest of the way.Takes a few trys to get it right . This can be done with a 5sp and a heel toe thing , but will not save as much time(1/10 sec. or less)and is hard on the clutch.This works because the springs wrap up so weight transfer is faster and the coverter is at stall speed.If you didn't stage right the frist time you will win next time.

Message: Go to the local dragstrip, even having to say go may give your opponent the advantage. Try a round where he says go. The start is so critical at the other end of the track it's best to go to the strip, also try holding the truck in each gear a little longer. If you are just racing in drive you probably aren't getting far enough into the trucks power.

Message: next time i will try some of your ideas. i even went as far as checking my available funds on my credit cards to just have a supercharger installed....lol but i realize that i am blowing it way out of proportion. my friend and i are both 26 years old and known each other since we were 4 years old and there has always been a innocent rivalry between us, i guess i am just tired of always losing...lol

Message: yeah, i read about Duner's truck. that is a very fine piece of work that he has done. i can honestly say that it is one of the most impressive things that i have ever seen. he has become an idol for us 4.7 guys...lol. my funds just wont alow me to do any major mods right now.

motor trend got a 15.8 out of the quad 2wd 4.7
they also have a 16.0 listed for a Silverado 5.3 extended cab 4x4, so the 2wd is prboably lighter
mods respond better on bigger engines and the 5.3 pushes 285 hp from the factory, thats a lot of power.

Message: yeah, i realize that; but i am going to keep trying! :) the funny thing about the whole thing is that he is a police officer but he still wont hesitate to race (as long as it is on a back road somewhere and away from others) but i am still trying to talk him into letting me race against his police cruiser just for kicks, but he totally refuses that......lol

Message: You could also try racing him without the jet chip. I never liked Jet chips, what gas are you using?
Race with a 1/4 tank, less weight.
Race with Spare removed, less weight.
Try Power Braking for better take off.
What kind of weather did you race in? Buy a IAT adjuster from Speedtweaks, only $32.50 after shipping. Heard good results, I just ordered one myself.
Make sure your A/C was off or defrost. Dumb question but it happends.

Message: when we ran, i was at about 1/2 tank, he actually had damn near a full tank, both had our spare tires attached, we didnt power brake, but i held the rpms just before the rear broke loose, it was humid, about 74 degrees F,
i was looking into buying an IAT adjuster, but something about cutting the facory wires just scares the hell out of me...lol my a/c was off.
but i do have the 70mm and 4" z-tube on the way, plus i am about to have some 3.92 gears installed. i think the main thing i need to do is what R.Middleton said, shift manually so i get into the higher rpm bands. thanks for the help

Message: You probably have a good shot at his cruiser as I believe most of them are geared for top end rather than good acceleration. But most likley he's worried about beeing caught in the act, can you imagine what his boss/sargent would do to him? 8-)
I still say to remove as many variables as possible you have to take him to the Dragstrip. Glad to hear my advice has helped I'm always pleased to help if I can.

Message: Ok boys heres the deal a dak could take a crown vic police car in a 1/4 mile shoot-out, a dak would get its a$$ handed to it, if the squad was a Caprice. I normally drive the Caprices when I'm at work, but I had to drive a Crown Vic the other day (my squad was in the shop getting a tune-up) and I can say my Dak would easily take it....The Crown Vic would take off after the 1/4 mile though, and the caprice would just keep going....WHY DID CHEVY STOP MAKING THOSE AGAIN?!?!?! The Caprice Interceptor is the smartest thing Chevy ever did, and the stupidest was getting rid of them....

Nextgen, I dont know what kind of POS youre Dept. runs, but If you cant take a Pickup truck from a dead stop then you should think about getting new pursuit cars. The Caprice weighed about 900lbs more than the CrownVic, Handled like S*it, and was more expensive. Most were TBI, and the only ones worth a d*mn were the TPI models. The current police package LTD has the 4.6 in it, along with drive line components not available to the average joe. In pursuit, you leave the tranny out of OD. They also have dual exhaust, and heavy duty trannys standard. What most people dont know is that Police agencies can order a whole slew of go fast goodies on them as options. 3.93 gears are standard. Our supervisors drive new ones and they flat out haul a$$. Now a real POS is the FWD. Chevy malibu. but thats another time.

The hypertech programmer is the difference. I know for a fact that it does wonders for the chevy 5.3. If I were you, I would look at the hypertech programmer for my 4.7. Don't sweat it, if he gives you a hard time, tell to take the hypertech off and run for money. If it was a close race, within 1 truck length, you'll beat him
without it.
I have a Quad Cab with a 5.9 that runs best of 14.95. I have yet to lose to any chevy 5.3, 4.8, 5.7 or even a stroked 350 (383). My best 60 ft time is 2.0. Do you have sure grip? I have found the best launch is power break to 1200 RPM then go, any more and you spin. 4.7 may be little different, just test it for your self.

i figured the hypertech had alot to do with it. hell, he was even able to raise his shift points with it. hypertech doesnt have a programmer for the 4.7 yet (not that i am aware of). i would ask him to undo his program settings to race him, but it is too big of a pain in the butt to reset everything. i dont know what kind of times mine would run, but im sure it is quicker than it was 2 weeks ago. since then i put a 70mm tb, 4"z-tube, and 4.10 gears, it really seemed to wake it up. i will let the computer learn everything for a while and i will give him another run, and see what happens, thanks for the help.
btw, i do have a LSD.

Message: i have a stock ex cab chevy 5.3 i will put up to your 4.7 any day put a 100 bill on it i have a friend who has a 5.3 just like mine but with the hyper tec and thermostat underdriver pulleys differnt injectores k and n cold air and flows and he hangs till about 60 then im gone till 99 then my shuts off but if raced many 4.7 and 5.9s and stoped all over them till 99 dont know what it is about it the only thing is a k and n that i have
