I have a 99 R/T with a cat that went bad. The dealer confirmed it but won't install the new one because the cat-back exhaust I put on is welded onto the stock cat pipe. To compromise they gave me the new cat to have installed wherever I choose. Basically they don't want to touch it because of the welding where if it was unaltered it would be a clamp job. Anyway, it's been rattling a little for a couple of months but up to now no problems. Last week the check engine light came on and there is a noticable whistling/rush of air and bogging down on heavy acceleration. I think there may be some sort of blockage. Now that I have the new cat, would it be sensible to replace the sensor in the cat and the one afterwards in the pipe in case I have done any damage to them as well? Are these sensors oxygen sensors and/or temperature sensors? Are they only available from the dealer or can you get them at Pep Boys, Autozone, etc? What about cost?

Thanks, Newby

They are 02 sensors, Bosch makes them. You can get them at any aftermarket parts store. Up here (Canada) they are $95 for the pre-cat sensor, and around $120 for the after. You can get them diagnosed to see if they are bad, it could just be the cat. The stock cats are notorious for shattering inside (I'm on my third)
