Subject: Clicking noise on acceleration... IP: Logged
Message: When I begin to excelerate in my Dakota; somewhere above 30 MPH I'd guess, I begin to hear this clicking noise. Went to a local shop and they told me I am using cheap petro and to pour some octane boost in the tank and change to 93 Octane. For some reason I think they are gravely mistaken. I use 87 Octane. And its a 1999 Dakota 3.9L
Thanks for the help.

Message: Sounds like pre-ignition, if under load, uphill, or when accelerating, and it could damage your pistons if bad enough. 87 octane SHOULD be enough, but go to 89 and see if it clears up. There are lots of reasons for this, hopefully you just got some bad gas. If it persists, see your dealer.

Message: Do you think it could be that my 02 sensors are going because I have 55,000 miles on the truck so I might not be getting the correct mixture as needed due to them. What do you think.
I'll be filling the truck up tomorrow with 89 octane with an octane booster. So we will see.

Message: Hey man, check for any exhaust leaks. I have the smae prob with my truck. I have been told that acceleration clicken is increased exhaust flow through a hole somewhere. Chech for a puncture or rust out. Good Luck.

Message: New exhaust and Cat. Compliments of the dealership. Heh. Something about the pipe was so far gone 6 months ago that it couldnt pass inspection and they MADE the dealership replace it for free because the pipe was made with a faulty metal or some crap like that. And the Cat was replaced not too long ago because the original one was about to fall off from the weld points.

Message: i have a clicking noise everywhere above 2400 rpm in my 97 3.9- it drives me crazy, but I can't find it either. I thought it might have been valve noise or something, cause it sounds like it might be coming from the heads. So I ripped the cover off, and checked all the rockers, and nothing. no broken springs, no funny wear marks, -nothing.
I even losened them all off (rockers)and torqued them down to the 21 foot pounds there are supposed to be at, nothing. If anyone knows what this is PLEASE let me know, cause I hate it.

Message: Hi guys,
I have been talking to a guy that used to own a Gen II Dak 3.9L. He also works at a mechanic shop that I deal with alot. He said that he replaced his timing belt once at around 150,000 miles. He said that once he got into the motor, in the timing area, he found a little oil tube that was barely touching the timing belt. And it caused a clicking noise. He simply pressed that hose backand the clinking was gone. I will try to get ahold of him and find out exactly what he was talking about. Good Luck.
