A buddy of mine has a 2000 dakota V6 and he noticed that when he adjusts his steering column up and down the headlights flicker. Well he noticed a smell like plastic was burning, so he took it into the dealership and apparently they are having a swarm of people taking their dakotas in for the same problem. The dealership said they might have to issue a recall, something having to do w/ the wiring setup w/ the tilt steering wheel. Now I have a 2001 R/T but haven't noticed anything but I'm taking mine in just incase. He wasn't specific about what year models are at risk...I'm assuming its around the 2000 models but I'm not sure. Just thought yall would like to know.

My 01 CC has been in the shop 5 times for a wiring harness in the steering column that kept coming apart due to binding(too short?) when using the tilt where I would lose speedo, radio, heater controls and back-up lights to name a few. They have ordered a new harness and I will have to leave it with them for another day to replace. It started the first night I drove it home @ 5:30PM, I went right back to the dealer and was there to almost 10:00PM until they found out what was wrong with it and had the entire dash apart of my brand new truck(I was sick) and broke off the tilt lever "cuz we never took one of these apart before", they have had it apart 4 times since then and will have it apart a total of six times when they finally replace the "defective harness". Haven't smelled any burning though, thank god! This is my only Peev with my truck so far, but is a nasty one and caused me some lost sleep.

You know what cracks me up. When you go to p/u the truck they give you a list that says they did all these checks before they gave you the truck. They check them all off as ok. Then five minutes after you leave, there is something wrong that was supposed to be ok. PISSES ME THE #@$% OFF.

Help!!!!!

Message:
I recently tried to tilt my steering wheel and when i did, something snapped off. The tilt lever is still in place and also retracts when pushed on, but when unlocking....the lever isnt grabbing anything therefore i cannot tilt my steering wheel. Should I take this in, or try to fix it myself?

I had the same problem on my '00 with my lights last year. I found the highbeam wire got pulled out of the crimp in the connector at the switch. I simply crimped it back on and that was that. Easier than dealing with the dearlship and their merry band of idiots(around here anyway).

I have an '03 SXT extended cab with the 3.9 and 5 speed... they issued a recall for that wiring harness because they claim the clutch is chafing the harness. I have yet to bring my truck in for the recall, but I have not noticed any problems with my wiring yet. **knock on wood** I'll probably take it to them this spring unless it screws up. just my $.02

This happened to me while drivning x-country
in my 99 CC 5.2L. Had a Firestone do work on
it & few hundred $$$ later it's fixed. They
replaced a module in the steering column that
the turn signal thing is connectedd to -
loose wiring at the harness. Workes fine 2
years later. Still have the reciept in the
off chance it's a recall & I can get a
reimbursement from Dodge. Yeah, go laugh.

Ya except those checks (PDI's is the term) are done when the car arrives. And the fact is you cant catch everything statistics always win. Stop expecting dealers to be gods. Blame the Manfs not them. Half the cars are on for a total of 15 mins before you get them its just impossible to catch everything.

Trest,

In firestone we called them CC (coutesy check)
or CVI (coutesy vehicle inspection). The CC
was a 0.1 hr & the CVI was a 0.3 hr. ($20)

The CC was basically a check off of underhood
fluids / tire pressure & the like, the CVI was
$20 to the customer to have a CC done + check
brakes & suspension ( rotor & pad thickness,
ball joint wear & such).

Turn signal problem
IP: Logged

Message:
I own a 2000 dodge dakota. The turn signal sometimes works just fine. At other times it will work flashing three or four times and then stop flashing. Other times it may only do it once. Is it the turn signal brights switch needing to be replaced? Could I get this at an automotive store?

Thanks!

Similar problem on my 2000 R/T. Radio clock flickered intermittently at first when adjusting tilt wheel. Then eventually the whole radio, wipers and everything else tied to the wire that I found broken off at the ignition switch connector. Cost no money to repair. (Helps to know how to solder though) I wound up wrapping the entire wire harness running up the steering column with a non-conductive "jacket" (the stuff used on aircraft). The way I supported it should give it enough strain relief.

There has been lots of posts on the subject of the tilt steering and headlights. I know there is a fix if you want to search for it on here. I've heard everything from signal relay to Timer relay module to a little purple wire that comes out in the steering column. As far as I know those are the only three things that explain it so far. So pick one and you got a one in three chance of getting it right. Good luck.

I have an '01 qc 4.7, i had the same problem with my blinkers, radio, cigarette lighter, all went off when I put my tilt steer down, it was that way when I bought it and was one of those problems that I noticed before i purchased it and was told it was fixed by the dealership that I didn't expect to be a god, just a little more honest with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
anyways I got it fixed under warrenty, all it was was a loose wire on a large plastic connector on the inside of my stering coulmn. The guy said it had something to do with the ignition. He replaced the connector 5k ago and havent had a problem since. Only took them 2hrs to diagnose and an hour to fix, i am a very impressed chrysler customer, too bad I bought it at a lying chev. dealer
