I don't know what engine's will be available, but I do know that there will be complete redesign for the 2003 Dakota. It will probably resemble the new Ram.

I think that the 3.7 v6 will replace the 3.9 and the 4.7 high output will be available. The 5.7 will probably replace the 5.9 r/t

The new 5.7L will be going in the QC models
only with the automatic. This engine will also
be included as a replacement for the aging
5.9L in the Ram. The 4.7L will still be offered,
but the HO version is rumored to be in the R/T.
This is what the dealer told me when I bought
my Dak on 10/11/01. So this info is up to date.
Hope that helps.

Jon is pretty close. Latest I heard is the 5.9 is no longer for the '03 model year. The 3.7 and the HO 4.7 will be used in the Dakota for '03, and for the '04 model year the 5.7 is supposed to find it's way into the Dakota for the QC and R/T packages. So if you want the 5.7 you'll have to wait another year.

If D/C follows their usual route, the 5.7 will show up in the grand Cherokee first.

I could almost care less when it comes out in a dak, i love the look of the current daks, so i just want the 5.7 in crate format. Does anyone know if this is gonna happen? i'd love to take out my (supercharged) 4.7 and replace it with a 5.7. As my dad always told me, 'there is no replacement for displacement.'

The redesign may not come until 2003 which would probably make it actually a 2004 model. Then it may not get the 5.7 until the year after that or 2005. The Grand Cherokee got the 5.9 the same year as the Dakota (1998) except that was also the last year the Jeep got it. The Dakota was getting the Magnum treatment before the Grand Cherokee even was made. The redesign of the Dakota is supposed to look like the Powerwagon concept of a few years back. It's hard to say what it will really look like especially in an R/T lowered 2wd version. The HO versiohn of the 4.7 will not get a manual in the current Dakota for the same reason the R/T doesn't get it now, the NV3500 is not rated for that much torque. Therefore the HO 4.7 Dakota will not be any faster then the current R/T. The 5.7 is supposedly getting a 5-speed designed for it so that will be different. I'm sure a normally aspirated 5.7 hemi 5-speed setup in a Dakota will run stock with the Supercharged/intercolled Lightnings. I'd like a crate 5.7 in the current body as well but really think a 360 could be built up to be faster for a lot less money, getting the setup from the factory with financing and a warrenty is a different story.

From what i heard from a relibale souce DC is NOT I repeat is NOT going to put the hemi in the next Dakota and does not have any planes to ethier. I will not hold my breath on the new Dakota after seeing the new Ram i am glad i got my 02 when i did. The only way you will be able to get the new hemi in a truck form is the new 2003 Ram SS/T rated at 340hp and 400lb torque.

I still don't think it will look anything like the new Ram. Maybe more like that other concept truck that was at the show but with a less of that "jeep" look it had. Supposed to be like the Powerwagon concept of a few years back. The very reliable sources at www.car-truck.com still say the 5.7 hemi will be in the next Dakota although maybe not the first year.

Production costs are supposed to be lower for the 5.7 than for the 4.7 because of the 4.7's twin cam design. Hopefully a crate motor won't be to much.

The 5.7 is also an iron block from what I understand so that will make it less expensive to produce as well.

Single overhead cam, yes, but it is a V8 so you have to have one for each cylinder head.

If you want displacement wait for the Dodge Ram SRT-10 to come out:D I think it would be cool if they made a Dodge Dakota SRT-10. They are doing it with some of the other Dodge vehicles, why not the Dakota? It would make them a good amount of money. Who wouldn't want to buy a Dakota with a v-10 hitting 500 horses and 500 lbs-ft torque? I would definitly get one.

The new 5.7 is supposed to come in both almunium and iron block versions depending on if it's for a truck or a car. Just like the current V-10.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned the Diesel version yet...

DC is trying to figure out if Americans would want a Diesel version on the Dakota...and I think that it will come to fruition along with the Body re-design in '04 / '05.

Just an FYI
