I have a '97 5.2 4x4, and I've installed a K&N intake, 3 chamber Flowmaster catback, and a Street Performance throttlebody spacer. I was expecting to get better gas milage w/ my mods but, in fact I get worse now! I am thinking that mabey my computer is trying to compensate fuel mixture to my increase in air flow. Could this be the problem?

If so...how would I fix it?

Nick,

What size Flowmaster? (Also, get rid of the TB spacer...they've been proven not to do anything on the 3.9/5.2/5.9L engines.)

It's 3". Other than that I don't know exactly what you mean by size. I'm 17 years old and my frist car was a '92 dak. Then I got the '97 later. I decided I wanted to get as much performance as I could out of my new truck....
... getting to the point... what else could I do to get better/more perform. out of my truck?
I just recently started looking for a super or turbo charger.Any comments on that?

my first recomendation would be to get a bigger TB into it to help compensate for the 3" exhaust

I feel your pain Nick... same thing is happening to me... with the same type truck ('99 5.2 4x4)

Only I don't have a TB spacer, just a K&N and Raven catback exhaust.

I've been keeping a watchfull eye on my gas gage and I'm getting about 180 miles to a tank!
I was told that if it was my comp. that was giving me this problem, I might be able to simply unhook my battery for about 30 minutes and this would "restart" my comp. and fixing the problem.
Has anyone heared about this before?

could be, but doubt it. When i did that it helped me regain lost low end torque, but then again, don't know why. Anyway, it's worth a shot

Nick the mods you made might give you a very mild increase in performance but really do not do much for milage. The throttle body spacer is one of the big rip offs in the world. The lessoning of milage is most likely due to your ear liking the sound of the flowmaster under full throttle.

I did think about that. I'm not gonna lie, I do like the sound of it. But having to fill up 2 to 3 times a week has kept my foot off the throttle a LOT.
So I guess the TB spacer wasn't the best thing to do. But...I was watching speed vision yesterday and I saw an info-mercial about the Tornado fuel saver which looks like a custom TB spacer. Does anyone have any experience w/ one?

I have a '97 , 5.2 , 4x2 , auto, 3.55 lsd , with many mods. The only 4 mods that made a big change in fuel use are ; ported TB , K&N genII FIPK, JBA headers , Black Magic 150 eletric fan.Stock I was at 14mpg mixed city-hwy and now it runs about 19mpg mixed. The fan was the biggest gain, it gave me about 2mpg.Most people claim that the "Tornado fuel saver" uses more fuel on a port injected engine, things like the "Tornado fuel saver" and that magnet thing that goes over the fuel line make about as much sence as placing a rag over the air filter.I know a person that will tell you that a Ford truck with a in-line 6 and a 4.10 gear will get better gas mileage with a trailer on the back, simple fact is the he has a lead foot and always drives 80,put the small trailer on the back and he slows to 65 his mpg goes up,what a surprize.

A winning combination is a 4.7L with 5-speed, 2 wheel drive and 3.55 gears... I average 18.7 mpg over the entire year and have seen as high as 23.5 mpg with tailgate off on the freeway. This in a heavy Quad Cab with 5 people always on board and in the Sierra Nevada foothills (nothing level up here!)

Aaro,

You say the electric fan gave you about 2mpg increase? I have heard of adding an electric fan but have not been sure why, could you explain? I have an 01 4.7 and will add an electric fan this week if I can pickup 1-2 mpg!

For mods I have Air Raid Cold Air Dam and Flowmaster catback where I have noticed a drop in mpg after mods made of about 1-2 mpg when driven normal and 2-3 mpg when lead foot is in place.

Thanks.

The 4.7 already has an Electric Fan as well as the Fan running off of the belts. The reason that it would get better gas milage is that the engine would not be running the fan, one less power robbing piece on the engine. An electric runs off of the Alternator and only pulls more juice, so a better Alternator is normally suggested, which robs the engine more.

I noticed an electric fan between the radiator and the engine fan, wonder if you actually need both or it is overkill? Maybe add a more efficient electric fan, the engine fan comes off easy enough, had it off for body lift install. Just a thought, otherwise an underdrive crank pulley would be considered to get back some of the lost hp and mpg.

I took mine off of my new truck did not notice any improvement in milage or power. But in my 97' I noticed a good punch much bigger fan in the 97' without the elecric assist there. It will not keep up by it's self in the hot weather and dosen't kick on until 210 degrees or when the A/C compressor kicks in. I should also say mine never roars like some complain about my 97' did roar badly at first start up.

Mine definately roars at first start up and sounds like Godzilla under the hood. So did you leave the fan off or did you put it back on since you noticed no difference in power or mpg? I am going to check around and see who makes an underdrive crank pulley for the 4.7, possibly ASP or Hypertech. I had ASP crank and alternator underdrives on my 99 3.9 and the headlights dimmed at idle which was annoying at nighttime especially with offroad lights on too so I'll just stick with Crank underdrive only. Thanks for the info!

I put mine back on. I would suggest if the weather allows just take off the engine driven fan and keep it behind the seat and see if it makes a difference in your truck. If the engine starts to get hot just pull over somewhere and put it back on. It is worth a try in my opinion. That way you will know if it makes a difference before you spend the money to buy a replacement electric fan.

Dave Mitchell, The new 4.7 would not gain as much as the 5.2 because the 4.7's belt driven fan robs much less power. The electric fan only runs when the ac is on or when you sit at stop lights,at speed ram air cools the engine and the electric fan only runs with the ac on .With the ac on the electric fan draws less power at highway speeds because the ram air helps the fan spin at max rpm and amp draw is reduced.

To get better gas mileage, the cheap things are: little wider plug gap, underdrive pulleys except alt, cool can for gas line,5w30 oil if you don't run hard..synthetics ARE worth the money, always have correct tire pressure. If you have money for an after market ignition i reccomend it. I get 18 low and 22.5 high 320 a tank when i drive conservitive.

You are getting that mpg with a 4.7? With what mods? If using an MSD, should you run one of their coils also for maximum benefit? and what's a cool can?

Always run the best coil you can. Reason being, the larger the gap in the plugs, the better burn and more mpg. You need more than a stock coil to get good spark for this mod. A cool can is a box or can around the gas line close to the intake ideally, that cools the gas for a dense charge. You fill it with ice so make sure you have a drain valve. I believe summit racing still sells them. I run pure synthetic oil, this alone is worth up to 2 more mpg and more power.Anytime you reduce friction you gain all around. A crank scraper is good. Run reduced pulleys except alt. Always run good tire pressure. The skinnier the tire the better the mileage. Less traction means less friction. This you would have to decide wether mpg or et is your desire as they offset each other. Email me if you need more tips.

Thanks for the info Snowman, very helpful indeed. Didn't realize that Synthetic Oil made that much of a difference, just thought the engine could last longer. I am at 8,000 miles right now and comin up on the next oil change, wonder if it is ok to switch to synthetic now. I think my next mod will be MSD with Blaster coil and larger plug gap, and an underdrive crank pulley soon after that.

You can switch to synthetic after the break in period. Just make sure its been long enough for the rings to seat. Usually after 3000 miles of driving will do it. If you dont hold one rpm You need to run the whole rpm range so they dont groove. You should be fine. Look for mileage increase after about 500 miles on the synthetic.
