Subject: 5th Wheel? IP: Logged
Message: I got a 2001 QC Dak 4.7, 4WD, HD Service group, HD cooling. Can I tow a 3500lb 21ft 5th wheel trailer? I think braking ability would be my biggest concern. Please share any opinions or ideas. Thanks
Ziggy

Message: Of course your trailer should have elctric brakes on it which means that you need to pull that factory harness out of your glove box and wire it to an electronic brake controller. The harness will then just simply plug into the connector under the dash. Simply mount the controller were desired. Mine is mounted under the steering wheel, against the dash by my right knee. You can then set the trailer to stop with its own brakes instead of your trucks'. You can buy a elec. brake controller at Wal-Mart for around $60 for a drawtite one which is decent or you can probably find one at NAPA. You can Pull a house and Stop it with the right tools!!!

Message: I pull a 25 ft Travel Trailer, 4500 lbs +, using an equilizer hitch and anti-sway bar. I've pulled it over 4,000 miles, including up La Veta pass in Colorado. It's fun pulling in next to diesel dullies pulling similar sized trailers, they always ask what I have under the hood. No problems so far. Have a 2001 QC, 4.7, 5-speed with the 3.9 diff. which really helps keeping the rpms in the range where you get max torque, i.e 33oo rpm. I did a few mods as well, z-tube, Gison Cat-back, TB spacer, 180 t-stat, Mobile1. Some people told me I wouldn't be able to stop it, since the trailer weighs the same as the truck. As long as you have good electric brakes, it isn't a problem. Just need to be careful when ever towing.

Message: Sounds good. I've got the 3.90 gears too. Do you guys get any detrimental rear suspension sag when pulling trailers of that size?

Message: They sell a kit from Firestone called the "Sportright" kit which consists of Air Bags that will level your ride out for around $400 for the kit. It also will improve your ride without a trailer! I haven't gotten that far yet but I'd love to get a set for my Dakota!!
