 Subject: Gen 1,2,3 Rear End Swap

Hello all.
I am on the hunt for a 3.9 or 4.1 Suregrip rear end for my 94 SLT. My truck has a 8-1/4 open 3.55 right now and I seem to be having issue with tread wear on the right rear tire.... :-)
Off to the junkyards this weekend... But before I go, wanted to ask a couple of questions.
Has anyone out there ever swapped rear ends from a Gen 1 Dakota into a Gen 2? Will the 6 stud axles from my 8-1/4 slide into an older rear end?
How about using a rear end from a D-150? I know it would require moving spring perches, but how about U-Joint size/driveshaft length?
Any words of wisdom on this subject would be appreciated.
