Subject: RE: Rear end ratio - 3.92 or 4.11? IP: Logged
Message: Well,
Lots of good info here. I have a 99 V6 CC running 275/60 R15s
( http://webpages.charter.net/khoegen )
I checked my glove box today and this is what I have:
DMC - Axle Ratio 3.21
DRA - Rear Axle Chrystler 8.2
The reason I mention this is that I want to convert to a limited slip before the winter, and seeing that the shop will be doing this, I figured it couldn't hurt to change the ratio as well.
Currently I do alot of highway driving (2hours daily), but this truck off the line is terrible. Most folks I talk with recommend the 3.92....from a gas mileage perspective, how much should I expect to lose? I'm guessing even the 3.55 is better than what I have now...but then again, everyone who has the 3.55 seems to want to go one higher :-)
Any input is appreciated...including where I should get all this stuff from. I know very little about gears and differential work, but I wanted to buy what I need online then have a shop do the install.
Thanks for the assist in advance.
Kevin

Message: There's about 300 more rpm on the highway with a 3:92 compared to a 3:55. Unless you are driving over 80 mph(!) a lot, the 3:92 is a great gear. I can't believe someone put a 3:21 on a V-6. That would actually hurt the mpg, especially in the city.

Your not kidding about the MPG....it is terrible, especially for a V6. Not only that, but I have done a number of mods to increase performance (Bored TB, K&N Air Intake, Flowmaster Cat-back, cooler plugs...and my buddies 99 V6 still kills me off the line.
Granted, it is a V6 so I don't expect to be matching up with an RT, or racing anything for that matter. But the Dakotas in general are 'peppy' trucks, and I'd like to see some of that off the line.

Message: You can lower the effective gear ratio slightly by going to 255/60/15 tires.

What does that do to the effective gear ratio?

Message: Kevin, I have 275 60 15's as well and they dont effect anything because they are the same diameter as the stock 215/75/15's at least on mine. I did do a swap recently from 3.50 to 3.92 and it didnt have a negative effect on highway drivability. The speedo is a little off though. Its off by about 10 percent.

Message: I expect my speedo will need some type of recal...since I am jumping from 3.21 to 3.92. It's probably gonna be more than a 10% difference.
Any suggestions
