A friend of mine just bought one. I got to take a nice lil ride and I'll tell ya what, it's got a good oomph! to it. It was a Wagon one and I think it could take you. There is of course only one way to find out, but you might be surprised...and maybe a lil humbled in the end. I say, race him, who knows unless you try, eh?

Car & Driver ran 0-60 in 5.4 seconds in a WRX this year. Most run low 14s, so, if you have a an average Dak 4.7 or R/T, it wouldn't be wise to race one unless you want to lose. if you have a fast Dak, I'd say go for it, because AWD or not, the driver may suck and you could take him out.

Speaking of WRX's, when I took my Dak to Capitol Raceway last night, a guy had one there for test and tune and ran a 15.5 while I was watching. The guy was a terrible driver, and just didn't really step into the pedal for some reason. I test drove the car when I was in CO a few weeks ago with 2 grown male passengers at 5500 ft sea-level, and yes, it is a fast little bastard! It's a detuned rally car man! Would love to have one, cause with a few minor mods, you could tear up new Vettes with its AWD. HMMMMMMMMMM, Dak or WRX????? hee heeee

WRX's are pretty fast but theres no way you gonna beat a vette, no way youre gonna beat a stock vette. you ever seen vettes race on the street? you ever heard one rev out? the WRX might be fast but its gonna need to be in the speed shop for a while before might be beatin vettes. new vettes run 12.4 1/4 stock, have 405 horsepower, and go 0-60 in 4 seconds. so i dont think even a worked WRX is beatin a STOCK vette anytime soon.

Whats all this about the WRX, if we're gonna talk about a rally car lets talk about a real one, The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (not the new gay lancer Mitsubishi brought over to take the 4 door mirage's place). Tommi Makinen and his Evo VI have claimed the last 4 World Rally Titles in a row. Whats funny is the Mitsubishi Evolution and the Impreza WRX are virtually brothers (being AWD 4 banger turbos) but the Evo is faster, meaner, and handles better. I don't mean to flame or anything, just taking out some of the frustation I have from waiting for Mitsu to bring the Evo to America.

Justin-

Yes, I've heard the new Vettes are brutal. I was referring to the ones right now that make 345hp, plus the LT1's. The reason I would prefer a modded WRX that ran high 12s to low 13s on the streets is simple- AWD is almost unbeatable in the hands of a good driver in stoplight drags. I love the latest Vette, but it can still be a handful to launch with all that torque and power going through the rear wheels. When I ran at the track the other night, a new one was beside me in the other lane and ran a 13.8 @ 101. He seemed to get off the line smartly, but had problems giving it too much gas. With a WRX, just rev that sucker to 4 grand, and when the light is green, let go and be sling-shotted off like a fighter jet off an aircraft carrier. All that traction is a dragracer's dream man! It's just that I've seen so many hot AWD cars down at the track that just tear up the competition because of this ability. I always wanted a GMC Syclone when they were available but couldn't afford one. Just my 2 cents........

Justin, the ZO6 has 405 HP, the regular vett has 345. the WRX might have truble with the zo6 but i think it (with mods) could take a regular vett.

Knobbyman, it wouldnt be wise to twin turbo the WRX, because 4 cyl cars dont have enough exhaust pressure to spin two turbos, also i dont think there is enough room for another turbo. a big single turbo would be the way to go ;-)

BH-RT, everyone in my family are mopar people, i wish DC would do two things
1. build a affordable muscle car that would compete (kill) against the camaro and mustang
2. get into rally racing and build a car to compete against the subaru. and make it look good

2000dak, is the lancer availabe in the US? also i had a tommi makinen in grand trismo, but how much are the two compaired to the subaru? the tommi (from my knowledge) is a lot of money and there arent too many dealer ships, so where do you go for warrenty issues?

My brother has a stock WRX but it is an automatic. I bet it's a pretty even match up against my R/T. I have never seen a good report of what a automatic WRX will run. Over on I-club the big subie site some folks only get mid 15's with the automatic, but some people with a good powerbrake technique do better. Then those good drivers usually add mods and then would smoke a stock R/T. The other problem is we are at almost 4000 feet, and the turbo WRX will not lose as much power with altitude as my R/T will, so I may have a problem there. I better race him soon as there will probably be snow on the ground in a few weeks and then I'm screwed. I had more fun all summer long then he had, but for the next 4 months the R/T won't be much fun. If I lived somewhere in the south I wouldn't even consider a WRX (I'd get something more like a little pickup with a big motor) but then again I'm biased enough toward Dodge to buy their 3rd fastest vehicle (Viper and Prowler 1 and 2) even though it doesn't make much sense where i live (Montana), at least it's more practical then a Viper or Prowler but if I could afford them I would have done it regardless of how practical they are.

I've been a AWD fan for years and have owned two Subarus that were a blast to drive. Too bad the WRX doesn't have their 2.5 engine with Turbo.

I currently have a 2001 AWD DAC QC: 4.7/auto/3.92/LSD/T&H/Sport+

I've never seen track numbers with the above type options, correct me if I'm wrong, but I would think the above truck, though slightly heavier, would give better times -vs- another truck but without AWD, right? (and I'm talking stock)

Does anyone own a 4.7/AWD/3.92 QC and taken it to the track? What times did you get?

BTW, I love stop lights and just flooring it on green, even in the pouring rain, pure 100% traction, getting thrown back in the seat (Jet Chip II, 70MM TB, 4 inch custom Z-Tube, Flowmaster Dual 2 1/2 inch exhaust, 3923s, and Royal Purple 5w30 synthetic racing oil, obviously add to that enjoyment)

Thanks.

The wrx autos are crappy and much slower than the 5 speeds. The manuals on the other hand are superb cars compared to the fact that you roughly need 10 grand more to have any other import that can keep up with it. However, remember that the wrx is turbocharged. Almost all dakotas will kill it if supercharged, especially v8 2wd regular cabs with a 5 speed.

Message:
AWD will usually hurt 1/4 mile times, compared to the exact thing in a RWD version. Most times also an identical FWD will beat the AWD in the 1/4 mile as well. It's more then just a little more weight, its rotating mass and it hurts performance in the 1/4 10 times that of regular weight like of a hood or a battery. So say AWD adds even 100 pound of transfer cases and drive axles, it's like putting 1000# in the bed of you Dakota, sure it helps with traction but not enough to overcome that added weight. A auto WRX is not necessarily that much slower then a manual WRX, I've been in my brother's when his has barked 3 tires on a launch, and immediately been into boost, not coming off. If you just let off the break and hit the gas it does spend a bunch of time getting to the 2500 rpm where a stock WRX starts making boost. But if you powerprake the snot out of it, it goes pretty good. You have to pump up the brakes and just stand on them, and the gas, for quite a few seconds. It comes up to 2000 rpm pretty quick but you still have to hold it while it creeps up towards 3000 rpm. When he lets off it will squeal the tires and not drop below 2500 rpm. I don't see how anything short of a 5000 rpm clutch dump on a manual will be much quicker, and I think the long powerbrake is still easier on the car then a 5000 rpm dump. All that said had they just made the WRX a fwd car it would have improved 1/4 mile times but hurt every other possible performance measurement. I'm sure some of the new stuff out from Nissan, Mazda, Acura, etc. may be faster in the 1/4 then the WRX but the WRX will still be an all around better car because of the AWD. Actually the automatic WRX also gets an improved AWD system compared to the manual WRX, which may be helpful when the weather really starts to stink.

And i'll bet ya the same WRX will run slower or quicker in different parts of the country. What you need to remember is the weather conditions, location (altitude mainly), and driver skill. These factors can, in some cases, change the 1/4 mile time by +/- 2 seconds in extreme cases and +/- .5 - 1 second on the average.

I guess Car and Driver as a money, no object opnion did pick the S4 over the WRX, but it was based on the same reasoning they use to pick other cars over the Viper when the Viper flat out smokes every measured performance catagory in one of their comparison features.

Well I guess I'd have to admit if money were no object, I would really want to buy... the Subie! and then put the extra $16,000 into pure performance mods. I'll take a taxi interior and better performance anyday to the best interior. If I wanted a nice interior for $40,000 I'd buy a 1 year old Caddy STS, man those are sweet on the inside, look good outside, and still have good power. Motor Trend ran 14.8 1/4 mile times with their 95 and 15.2 with a 98. I've test driven both years and the 95 does feel a bit faster and less refined, the 99 I drove I wanted bad, $25,000 but it had too many miles (63K) and I don't know about working on those northstars myself. Plus I could never have put a dead deer in the trunk of one of those. I did get to do that with my R/T yesterday, it even had a nice blood smear dripping down the back of the tailgate.
