Saw a 64' Electra with a flame kit on his duel exhaust. How hard are the to rig up and would they work on my 318 dakota?

i dont believe you need a kit, and they are supposedly really easy to hook up, but i guess it is extremely dangerous. i have the basic plans to do it if you want. i dont want to be responsible though if you lose your eyebrows.

If you are talking about flame throwers, it is possible BUT, you would have to find A way to bypass the computer controls (you can't shut off ignition without shutting off injectors)go to http://www.corpcomm.net/~cjhacker/
go to the message board (nothing but flame throwers)

Its reallly easy, you need a coil and a plug and fuel. Plug goes in exhasut pipe and coil sends spark when you press the button. It isnt extremely dangerous, I know a bunch of guys with it. Once we hit the button while parked it flamed up way high and wouldnt go out. But we quickly learned that if you start the motor and rev it it blows out the flame. Best to do it while moving. The car actually shuts down when you do this. check hot rod shops for it like mooneyes or someone. doesnt work as well on fuel injected engines.

We were talking about this in my auto class the other day when someone wanted it on his import. The instructor said that they were really easy "back in the day" because you had more carburated engines. All you had to do was crank it up real rich and add a spark plug to it. But today with the new fuel injected engines, unless you mess with the computer to make it run real rich, its really hard to do. Personally, I'd like to see someone hook up a propane tank to the exhaust and blast a flame out about 10 feet long (wouldn't that look bad ass sitting at a stoplight) but thats just my opinion!

with cats, forget about it!it will not work.not enough unburnt fuel in the exhaust to ignite.anything else would be too dangerous.

It would not be A good idea to use propane as A fuel supply for flame throwers.
To get enough propane in the exhaust system you would have to have A 45 Lb. tank mounted somewhere on your truck, and if the flame ever gets to the tank,,,,,,,,well dos anyone remember what happened to wolverine's truck in the movie "X-men".
To make flame trowers on A truck that has Cats, the fuel would have to be injected into the exhaust pipe after the cat. and then ignited at the exhaust tip.

You will have to run without Cats and switch over to A carberator, Fuel injection will not dump enough fuel into the exhaust due to the O2 sensor telling the computer to lean out the mixtureof fuel and air.
There is A way around it if you have the time and money. Take A small gas tank from A push mower, hook up an electric fuel pump and A check valve ( to prevent fuel or fire from going back to the tank ) route the lines down to the exhaust drill A hole in the exhaust and weld the line into the exhaust pipe with some kind of nozzle to help atomize the fuel.
Now take A small electric motor ( windshield wiper motor )and take A piece of aluminum round stock drill A hole in it off center and mount it on the shaft of the electric motor.( this will act like A cam lobe ) make A bracket to mount two sets of points to ride on the cam lobe, set the points to open and close when the motor is turned on . Wire up two coils with the motor and fuel pump to A switch. mount the coils on the frame by the exhaust and drill A hole in the exhaust tip about 6" from the end.
only turn it on when the engine is running. !!!

Hank Hill gave it to me on good authority:"Do not use propane to do this as you will blow up your truck" Use kerosene injection in the exhaust and a spark plug hooked up to it's own ignition system.

It is possible with propane just run tubes from the bottle to the end of the exhaust add a spark plug hook it up to a switch. you should have flames add a regulator to adjust the pressure, as long as your connections are tight and no leaks you shouldnt have a problem. its really no different than the torches you can get for propane tanks. And since our trucks have cat conv's their really should be no chance that the flame could work back up the exhaust. Heck jesse james added one on monster garage!

just my tencents

I have a 1968 SS el camino Mud Bogger , we are night racing in B.C and I want to install flame throwers into the pipes .
The motor is a 468 with a 250 hp nitrous boost making approx 1150 hp . my collectors are 5" and they point away from the car just behind the doors, I feel propane will blow out and thought I could install another pump and inject gas into the collector with a igniter in front .
Is this advisable and is there a chance of implosion

I need to know how they did it , I have heard of some people mixing alcohol with racing fuel for the blue flame effect , I am looking for the actual construction information ,I want to put on a show for the spectators not a barbeque

Just to let you know, the flame kits and instructions can be found at the following addresses.

www.dragon-exhaust.com
www.gotflames.net

I would love to see a dakota with either kit installed. That would be perfect for the bumper huggers at rush hour.
