Subject: NAPA Distributor Cap
IP: Logged

Message:
After looking unsuccesfully at several places for a Borg Warner Distributor cap for my 2001 5.9, I finally bought a NAPA cap and rotor. The cap has all brass contacts. The "parts guy" told me that Borg Warner makes the NAPA caps (??).

Anyway, the NAPA cap has a built in "vent" to allow moisture to escape. Does the Borg Warner cap have this also?

Has anyone used the NAPA cap? Any comments on how it compares with the BW?

Thanks.

PS.. Could/should have ordered the Borg Warner stuff from Speed Tweaks, but was too impatient.

I bought the BW cap. It is a much heavier duty cap than stock. I really like it. You can find them at Fisher or Federated Auto Parts, if you have one in your area. The Napa caps are fine, if there brass. Alot of parts stores say that have a cap with brass contacts, but it is really just gold paint. I have found this in quite a few places. Another good cap is a Wells Premium. They quit selling them in my area, however. I last seem one about 3 years ago. They have brass contacts, are red in color, and cost about $12-15. I really like them, though. Yes, the BW cap does have a vent. Your Napa cap is fine, as long as the contacts are brass. Brass is a much better conductor than aluminum. Hope this is the info you were looking for.

Troy - Thanks for the response.

Sounds like the NAPA cap will be fine. Also sounds like it may have been made by Borg Warner as the parts guy said. Parts are brass.

NAPA cap and rotor were $14.98 plus tax....

Dakaty, I agree with you, that NAPA cap is brass, I saw it after I bought my BW, so I am sure it will work fine for you.

Good luck,

Hey you Rascal...

Did the NAPA look similar to the BW? Did both have the same style air vent? Would you think they were both made by same manufacturer?

Thanks

I don't know about the BW having the vent, but sounds like a good idea. I would not be surprised if they are the same manufacturer.

If you go to Pepboys, they sell the BW brass. All you have to do is ask them. I know that the 5.9 is the same as the 5.2's. As far as I know.

Boomer: FYI - I did go to Pep Boys (Houston) and they did not have a listing for a late model (1999 on) 5.9. Neither did 0'Reilly or Auto Zone.

Rascal: Did I mis understand your post? I thought you bought a BW. If so did it have a vent?

Thanks

Yes, the BW cap has a vent and the part number is:

C274 - Cap
D223 - Rotor

Those cover even the 2002 models.

Troy - I stand to be corrected but I have always been told that aluminim is a better conductor of electricity. The benefit of brass to us is that it doesn't corrode/errode, as aluminum does, when a spark jumps the gap. I know aluminum is better than copper but they quit using aluminum back in the 70s for house wiring because of the connection problems. The aluminum would expand and contract with hot/cold and then become slightly loose. It would start arching next. Burnt down some houses. I've had first hand experience with that. Regardless of reason, brass is better.

Actually both copper and brass are better conductors of electricity, Alluminum is a better conductor of HEAT, thats why the make heat sinks out of alluminum.
