Message: I first thought of reliability when I noted that the 5.9 only comes paired with an automatic. And I see that you cannot order 4X4 with the 5.9, possibly only because it is a street performance engine. Incidentally, my 2001 brochure says you can get a 5.9 CC Sport, but it was either canceled or the brochure is just mis-printed. Anyway, just how much more power can I get from the 4.7 before things start to break? I doubt this is published, so first-hand experience is what I'm asking. Specifically, those of you with aftermarket-enhanced V-8's (4.7 preferred) AND 4x4 systems. No sense in boosting power/torque if I'm going to wad my 5-sp, transfer case, diffy's, etc.
Thanks!

Dan,
As with most "OffRoad" enthusiasts, HP isn't as big of a concern as TQ. Since most of the offroading is done under 2500-3000rpm, keeping the TQ curve down low is more important. Suggestions: (Coming from a buddy in CA with a '00 4.7L 4x4...and regularly taking it offroad), Z-Tube, K&N Filter (and one spare filter...just in case) and nothing else done to the engine. He concentrated on the gears (3.92:1 Factory) and better breathing. (And of course some Weld 15x8's w/31" BFG's.)
