Message: Dan, Don't get too excited about what a "ram air" hood can do for you.I have the AAR hood and while it looks awesome, the underhood plumbing was crap! It just fed into a stock type airbox and thru a stock size panel filter.I chucked all that junk and went with an Intense Performance stage III cold air.It keeps the air temp to within 2 (two)degrees of ambient.Thats about as good as it gets!
My advice would be to check out all the underhood stuff before you buy a particular hood.Or just leave the hood cut-outs intact (but painted flat black) and go with a cold air setup. However I have seen some hoods with the system that uses a standard 14X3 filter where the base plate is sealed th the underside of the hood's airbox with a foam collar like the old Chevelle cowl hoods. This should work fine also. Also, check out this link:
www.ramairbox.com
They have some intresting systems.
Good Luck!

Message: Thanks for the input Dave. The hood that i will most likely get is going to come from Suncoast Creations in Bradenton, Fla. The RamAir hood they have is like the steup you described in the latter part of your string. It has the two intake holes at the top of the hood obviously and then the intake seals to the bottom of the hood like you said. Pictures of this hood can be seen at suncoastcreations.com .Click on '97-up Dakotas, and you'll see the hood. There are also many other performance parts that they offer for "our" Daks.

Message: Thats the same hood I have. I think the intake is to restrictive. I am deciding to go with a different intake.

Message: The show was OK.It was called a Slam Fest.Mostly lowered rice burners, but a few Dakotas and Durangos.Got a few good ideas for my Dakota. Was really depressed most of the time tho...Got a speeding ticket up around the Bradenton area,86 in a 70.That's $148 out the window! guess my nitrous will have to wait another few weeks.I saw a Dakota at the show with a Suncoast hood like you like, great looking hood,Looks like a very nice, well made high quality unit. You couldn't go wrong with EITHER hood! These are the GOOD kind of hard decisions! :)
