My engine is knocking on hard throtle when I take off. Can bad gas cause this? I have 4.7 with upgraded computer. The dealer said using 87 was fine. What does anyone think????

Mine does that too. It runs fine on the recommended 87 except when I step on it going up a hill then it pings. The gas isn't bad. Most manuals advise that you will hear a light pinging under hard acceleration. If it bothers you then move up to mid-grade or premium.

I've got a 4.7 and it does the same thing on 87 oct. If I use 89 I only hear it occasionally? Does anybody know if this hurts the motor in the long run???

I have a 2000 QC 4x4 with the 5.9. It also pings when getting on the gas on a hill. I know the manual says some slight pinging is normal, but I do not like it. I have always heard that pinging is hard on the engine.

Its not pinging its knocking. I will try a higher grade or different gas. I usually use Amaco and I filled up at Mobil, I dont think my truck likes Mobil food.

I don't think a little pinging will hurt an engine but a heavy knock is hard on stock cast pistons and head gaskets. I had a GM 2.5 that used to knock so bad on any grade of gas while going up hills that I would always ease out of the throttle because it sounded like it was coming apart. I did get 160,000 out of it so I wouldn't be concerned too much. It wouldn't hurt to dump a high quality fuel injector cleaner in you tank at the filling station once in a while also. Just make sure it will treat at least 22 gallons and put it in just before you add the gas and don't refill the tank again until you have used at least three quarters of the tank. Mine seems to idle a little smoother and run a little better after this.

I forgot to add that trying different brands of gas wouldn't hurt either. I know it's supposed to be made to the same standards but I've had different mileage figures and different performance results form different brands and stations.
