Subject: noisy engine-2000 5.9 IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 Dakota QC 4x4, w/ the 5.9 engine. When I am sitting idling, I can hear the engine making a ticking sound. The sound is most prominent in the area directly behind the dash/ stereo. It is not extremely loud, but loud enough to notice. I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing this, or not. I think it may be the injectors ticking, but it is somewhat annoying, so I would like everyone else's opinion. I also use synthetic oil. I have been told by a few people that synthetic oil may make the engine a little noiser, because it is so slick, and doesn't make as big of an oil cushion as conventional. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen. Thanks.

Message: I would bet your haveing a bit of arcing going on by the distributer. Arcing is when the spark jumps of the distibuter insted of going down the plug wire. It will make an electrical ticking and might not happen all the time.
What i would do is change the cap and rotor and plugs and plug wires. Sure its a chance but thats all i can think of. Plus the ticking is right behind the sterio and thats where the distributer is. Syntetic oil will not make a ticking in a dodge engine. Have used it in sevral and not had any changes.

Message: I also get this on my 99 R/T. It does not happen all the time, but when it does it is at idle. It is a slight ticking noise which you can not hear under acceleration or at brief stops. I use redline full synthetic, but it happened before I started using it. It is very sporadic, I really have no clue what it could be.

Message: I have a 96 Dodge Ram Indy that experiences that same problem that you described with the 5.9. It can honestly be a number of issues with the truck all the way from the lifters to the rocker arms that are making the ticking noises. I'd honestly like to know what the noises are myself :) I'm sure somebody knows what it is for sure.

Message: the 5.2 and 5.9 have had noisy lifter since as long as I can remember. Especially when cold and typically gets better once it is warmed up. Both of my 94 5.2's did it, my 99 R/T did it and my 2000 QC 5.9 does it. This is nothing to be worried about. The problem is much less now that the Magnum engines are using roller lifters since 92'.
this should be a fairly quiet ticking but if yours is louder, there may be something wrong. Check the coil wire connection as well as all the spark plug wires for any burn marks. if you do alot of towing you can burn wires sooner. Also, check the inside of your distributor cap for cross fires. You will see little traces of gray residue where the arcs are missing the points.
Hope this helps.

Message: Gentleman, you are all barking up the wrong tree. What you should look for is an emissions relay mounted to the firewall on the driver side in engine compartment. Many have complained about this noise. It does not hurt a thing, but has people asking questions. Talk to your dealer about this, I bet they have a fix for it. Good luck.

Message: The PCV can make a high speed rattle or tick, the fan clucth can produce a loud radom tick noise on some(seen this on 3 V6's),but it is probably the injectors.Mine had one, it was the thottle cable vibrating on the valve cover.Injectors snap shut so the can all make noise, with no intake over them to block the sound waves the sound is easy heard on our engines.
