Did you guys / gals hear about the 4.7L HO in the new laredo's, (well it's offical) they also have a 5 speed auto (5-45re) this is all old news though isn't it. It would have been nice if they would have put that in the 2002 Dakotas.

HIGH-OUTPUT VERSION OF 4.7-LITER POWER TECH V-8
The new 4.7-liter Power Tech V-8 High-Output engine for 2002 produces 260 horsepower (195 kW) at 5100 rpm, and 330 lb.-ft. (448 N•m) of torque at 3600 rpm, representing a 15-percent increase in horsepower and 12-percent increase in torque over the highly acclaimed 4.7-liter Power Tech V-8 engine. Both engines are mated to the five-speed automatic transmission that made its debut for 2001. This 545RFE transmission provides a second overdrive gear for increased highway fuel economy and reduced engine noise at highway speeds. The high-output version of the 4.7-liter engine is standard on the new premium Overland model, and available on the Limited. The standard 4.7-liter engine continues to be featured on the Limited, and available on the Laredo model. Laredo continues to offer the 4.0-liter Power Tech I-6 engine as standard equipment.

Re the tranny: My understanding is that the multispeed unit used behind the 4.7 is the same tranny and only the programming is different thus making the Jeep version a 5 speed. Can anyone confirm? If so I would think you could get the Dakota one reflashed with the 5 speed program. Of coyurse, whether it is worth it depends on the internal ratios available.

I agree that the transmission hasn't changed at all just in the programming. They can even reprogram the 2000 Jeeps where it wasn't even an option to use 2 overdrive ratios. I'm not sure how it works and if it eliminates the double 2nd gear. The transmission may actually use a gear splitting system and 4 forward gears which in theory could have 8 different forward gears. I don't know how this relates to the automatic in the Dakota 4.7 but I bet it is physically identical as well and just programmed differently. There is a bunch of info on this at www.jeepsunlimited.com

The only difference from the 545 RFE and the 45 RFE is the programing. They only add a second overdrive gear that is about 200-300 RPM less than the original, still has the alternate second gear for passing. You can have your dakotas done to the 545 spec there is a bullitin for a exhaust drone. I doubt you would see anydifference in milage and probably wouldn't even feel the exra gear.

Our $38,230 test vehicle was equipped with the new five-speed automatic transmission mated to a 4.7-liter PowerTech V-8 engine. The new 545RFE provides a second overdrive gear for increased highway fuel economy and reduced engine noise at highway speeds. This new transmission replaces the multi-speed 45RFE, and features a tall 3.00:1 first gear that gives the driver better initial acceleration, real-time driver adaptive shifting and an alternate second gear ratio that gives the driver five forward ratios.

This new transmission builds on the sophistication already part its predecessor, 1999 multi-speed 45RFE, featuring unique characteristics such as a tall 3.00:1 first gear that gives the driver better initial acceleration, real-time driver adaptive shifting and an alternate second gear ratio that gives the driver five forward ratios, enhancing driveability and performance.

I'd sure hope to see a lot more then the 4.7 HO in 2004 Dakota R/T. The 2004 will be bigger and thus heavier. Unless they come up with a new 5-speed for the 4.7 HO you won't see the nv3500 mated to the 4.7 HO, it's torque is over even the HD nv3500's limit. Therefore I bet even in the current R/T the 4.7 HO (and the required automatic) would be no faster then the current 5.9. Put this combo in a bigger, heavier truck and your going to be slower then the current model by quite a bit. If the redesigned Dakota doesn't get a 5.7 hemi in the first year then don't even bother making a R/T version until it's ready. This whole thing just happened with the Neon redesign, they dropped the R/T and ACR package until the 150 HP motor was ready, problem is the car got porkier with the redesign so the best neons are still the 98-99 models, until the SRT comes out with the turbo 2.4. They should have just waited and put the R/T on that car. I hope the ACR has the option of the 2.4 turbo as well.

I for one will not wait till 2004 for a 265 hp 4.7 HO dakota R/T. That is hardly worth waiting for in any aspect. I would definitly buy a ram R/T or SST with the 5.7 hemi if that ever happens. Looks like dodge will probably dropp the ball on the R/T. Well my other option is the silverado SS which looks pretty sweet!

why is it so hard for people too understand how the 45rfe works! With six cluthes and 3 planetary gear sets (and a roller clutch that is only used when the output shaft speed is less than 150 RPM)! With the gear sets you can get 8 forward gears, now control that with a computer and you have the ability to work through the possible gear ratios as you please! There is no difference between a 545rfe and a 45rfe, the only difference is the control module software. By the way J.J. you sound like you don't know squat!
