Subject: "Dual Exhaust" What size pipe?? IP: Logged
Message: With all this talk about dual exhaust, what should be the recommend pipe size 2.25" or 2.50"? I have the 4.7 in my beast and I don't want to lose any low-end grunt, I would also want a little increase in mpg. The setup I want is not offered buy any exhaust companies, exiting behind the rear wheels.
One more thing I have the 4X4 option with the 31.5 x 10.5 tires including the spare, I notice that the spare is mounted more on the left side. Will this affect the tail pipe exiting on the left side? It looks kind of tight.
I'm thinking of this setup: running a dynomax ultra flo 1 in 2 out with 2.25 or 2.50 piping exiting behind the rear wheels, tips probably Gibson's slash tips which are polished stainless steel 3" size, with all aluminum pipes. What do you think??
Thanks in advance
Anthony

Message: I would use the 2.5. I have the Gibson dual outlet catback 2.5 with 3" tips on my V6 and have no problems...Good Luck

Yup...I totally agree as well. No more than 2.5" for the tailpipes.

Message: I know that this is'nt the same situation as you
have but it may help in deciding on pipe size.
I ran 3" alumunized pipe from the cat to an 18"
magnaflow muffler and 3" tailpipe SOUNDS REAL GOOD
and performs better! One thing to keep in mind is
that if you go to big you don't get the proper
back pressure and the air is moving so fast that
the oxygen sensor dos'nt send the proper message
to the computer. good luck!

On a single system, the 3" hands down. On a dual system (even on a V8), no more than 2.5" unless you built the engine for high RPM driving or it's supercharged.

Message: I decided to dump the idea of duals, and go with a dynomax 3" cat-back instead. This cat-back sound really good, my buddy has it on his truck and there is an increase in power.

Message: Anthony, were you able to install the Mopar dynomax unit yourself (with clamps and not welding)?
I figure I could remove the old unit and place that unit on the truck and go and have it welded and save myself some $$$.
Also, I couldn't find a exhaust system in the Mopar High Performance book for a 01 Quad Cab 4.7 Dakota. You wouldn't happen to know of one and a part number would you? I would rather buy Mopar if at all possible.
Thanks man,

Message: Eric I didn't get the cat-back yet,it should be easy to install it yourself as it is a bolt on system. Check if there's a part number for a 2000 quad cab, that should work too. The reason why i'm stalling is because I want to get the Gibson's duals, BUT the spare might have to come out which I don't want. Otherwise I'll go with the Mopar system.
By the way Dynomax makes Mopar's cat-back system.

Message: Thanks for the info. I went back by the dealership again this morning and we can't find a cat back for the quad cab. They are going to make some phone calls about it. I said screw it, and went by and had a mellatone muffler put on it.
This is a work truck so I just want to pep it up a little and get a little better mpg out of it. The mellatone is nice sounding and was cheap. :D
Thanks for the heads up. Now, on to figure out what intake assembly to get....

Message: I've had both 50 and 70 series with duals on Daks. The sound out the back is nearly the same, the 50 is slightly louder, but the 70 eliminates floorboard noise. 50 is 16" long, 70 is 22".
