Subject: MAP Sensor effect

Message:
What effect does the MAP sensor have? Timing and
fuel vs engine load? Could you fool it in some
smart way to improve mpg's? If you told the PCM
that you were at lesser load than you actually
were, would it give less fuel? Prolly less timing
too (worse for mpg). Or do the O2 sensors have
final authority on fuel ratio?

That's one of the sensors that determines timing and fuel. MAP, TPS, CTS, IAT, and O2 are what mainly determine the timing and fuel curves...in Closed Loop only. Under Open Loop, the O2 is ignored.

I'll check the old postings...I had written the actual description and modes of Closed and Open loop operation.

As for messing around with the MAP, you can...but you have to be able to determine the actual load (up hill, down hill, light throttle, part throttle, WOT, etc.) to be able to adjust the MAP sensor. And then...you hae to keep it within the PCM's tables otherwise, if it's out of range, you'll trip a code and the PCM will override with the static tables.

Timing, however, can be slightly manipulated by changing the resistance of the IAT sensor:

http://lonestar.texas.net/~bernd/MAP.htm

Been working on a few other projects as well with the MAP and TPS correlation and am trying to get some hard-copy tables for the factory PCM's.

Bernd, wouldn't any fuel injected engine run better and get better mileage if DC used MASS sensors on their engines instead of all these sensors that are basically variable resistors that give outputs and then timing and fuel are controlled based on predetermined values in a table instead of actual values that a MASS sensor would be able to provide since the MASS changes it's output directly proportional to the amount of air molecules entering the intake? I don't know if it's especially good for power but, based on products that do use MASS sensors (GM & Ford)gas mileage and emissions seem to be better.

It's a give and take on the MAP vs. MAF. MAF is much easier to tune with forced induction (and cams)...but MAP is slightly more accurate at higher HP levels (factory system sucks though).

The thing to remember is that MAF is Non-Linear...MAP is Linear. The conversion isn't going to be easy. I've got a Mass Air Meter sitting at the shop and will be playing around with the voltages (and comparing to the MAP). Will try to figure out the algorithm for the voltage conversion...don't know how long that will take though.

Hi. I have a 92 Dodge Dakota 4X4 with the 5.2 L 318 V-8 and I need to get a map sensor for it. Instead of the regualr factory map sensor, is there like a high performance map sensor? My truck is not turbo charged.

Tell me this ain't weird. The Kenne Bell i put on my 2000 4.7 dak came with a MAF. the Map sensor was also kept. I've actually had to re-rout the MAP sensor cuz the Kenne Bell by-pass thingy didn't work and i was gettting codes, not to mention the thing would not idle. I don't think reading boost is a good thing for a MAP sensor.

The 'Check Engine' light came on one day and still does in my Dakota. Its a 1988 V6 with over 203,000 miles on it. So I accessed the on board codes to see what the problem might be. It read code 13 which the manuel said was the MAP sensor. So I bought a book that explained how to trouble shoot the sensors. It said to unplug the sensor, jumper the two outside pins together [plug to sensor] the center pin of the sensor goes to the positive lead of a volt meter and the negative goes to ground. Turn the ignition on the voltage should be 4.6 to 5 volts. Next start the engine and let it idle voltage reading should be aprox. 1 to 2 volts. The vacuum line was checked and is ok. My voltage readings were fine which makes me a little hesitant in just going out and buying a $100 sensor. Anyone got any idea?

Hey jammer, if the sensor checked out ok it may be the contact point were it plugs in. clean up the leads and see what happens. Your trouble may just be a dirty plug.

The MAP sensor is located on the front of the throttle body. It’s a black rectangular box with a set of wires coming from it.
