I am about to order a new 2001 Quad Cab 4x4 and am trying to decide on the full vs part time 4x4 option for the truck. Any comments or experience with either would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I bought a '01 Quad about two months ago with the full time transfer case. It isn't a favorite by serious off roaders. I don't plan on doing any serious off roading (ie. rocking crawling) but it does awesome in the winter on snowy roads. If you plan on going all out offroading, go with the part time.

Go with the part-time and get the L-slip rear diff. I have this and combined with the tire and handling group(rear traction bar, bigger all-terrian tires) this truck has great traction even in 2 wheel. The truck will drive better in 2 wheel compared to all-wheel drive, and if you do ever need 4 by, you can switch to it with the turn of your wrist. I test drove an all-wheel dakota, didn't like it as much. Just my opinion.

I test drove a 01 full time 4.7, I was not impressed. My V6 could walk it, gas milage is probably worse due to the AWD also. Still was a nice truck, thats my opinion.

Well I ended up going for the full time version. I am not planning on doing any serious rock hopping or major modifications in the near future. About the biggest thing in the 4x4 world I will be doing is chasing the big bucks while hunting a couple of times a year. The rest will be battling this God awful traffic in Northern VA. I really am looking forward to the new arrival in about 6-8 weeks. I'll be getting a brand new 2001 Patroit Blue Quad Cab 4.7L 4x4 SLT Plus pretty much loaded less leather and a couple of other things that I can always come back an upgrade myself. Thanks again for all the information! Nice to know there is such a following for the Dakota. I never imagined myself with one but think I made the right choice! :o)
