Can anyone tell me what would be a good throttle body upgrade for my 99 5.2L? I've heard people talking about Flometrics 50 mm.

I'm hoping to do the same... can you tell me what you mean by keeping the original? Is Holley pricier? Thanks.

I have a F&B 50mm. Good power gain, truck runs great. Highly recommended. If you ever get rid of your truck, you can simply put your OE one back on, and sell the F&B to help get some of your money back.

By keeping the original, I mean that some TB makers want your stock unit in exchange for their re-worked unit. They will usually give you, like $100-$125 credit for your old unit. These are the guys that just bore out a stock, dodge TB. If you buy a billet model like a Holley or F&B, etc, these are made from scratch and there is no "core charge", you get to keep your stock unit up on a shelf for when you sell your truck.I got an attic full of stock parts.

Dave,

Do you have a picture of the Holley unit on your truck? I had spoken with one of the designers of it and i'm curious to see how yours looks.

$427 for the Holley unit...and the Flometrics is only $400, and the Fastman is only $250 (with core exchange). ;)

Jim: If you're on a budget, grab yourself a factory V8 throttle body from the same year/make and the throttle cable to match and it's a direct bolt-on with noticeable performance gains.

If you want a custom TB, and budget depending, the Fastman or Flometrics are excellent units. 48mm for the V6 unless Supercharged...then a 50mm works excellent. (52mm will work, but not required for the V6 as it will never use 790+CFM unless seriously modified or Supercharged.)

Bernd, thanks for that info, I wondered if you could do that. Would the gains differ hugely from ordering a new one, say Flometrics or Fastman? Either way with a V6, I'm best to stay with a 50mm, right?

Lesley,

For a mildly modded V6 stay with the 48mm. The Flometrics & Fastman do out perform a stock TB from a 5.9L, but for the differnence in price I went with the stock 5.9L.

Flometrics - 400.00USD
Fastman - 250.00USD + core
Stock TB - 250.00CAD from local dealership w/ discount

Rez, Yeah, I had a Hughes TB and they are "reworked" stockers. The one I had was a piece of CRAP! The blades would stick wide open and stay there! I had it on for a total of 3 miles.Took it off and sent it back and they had the nerve to charge me $60 for a re-stocking charge for a defective unit! I'll never buy anything from them EVER! This guy is just building them out of his garage somewhere,a real rinky-dink operation,go with a Holley!!!
Dave.

After doing all the machining work on my own TB and seeing problems with Holly's castings I would deffinatly go for a billet unit. I don't know if some of the more experienced people on this board have seen air pockets in the metal, but i sure saw them on mine. This leads me to wonder just how clean the vacume passages are.

When I was grinding out the TB, I noticed "ridges" I had to go back with a coarser stone to get the ridges out. It finally got everything smooth, But I am looking forward to a billet tb.
