Message: The lease on my Wrangler just ran out and I opted to get a Dakota, I ordered a Reg Cab, 3.9 5-speed, normal rear-end gearing. I wanted a 5.9, but desired a stick, and good gas-mileage. I know I should have gotten the 4.7, but I couldn't affored the extra fuel, and insurance.
Can my 3.9 5-speed beat a 4.3 4X4 s-10? and is the motor really as bad as many of the posts make it out to be? Also what are some inexpensive mods I can make to increase HP, I'm a student so money is tight.

Message: not sure on the s10 race. as for cheap mods you can start with a home brew open element fileter intake. k&n part number KNN-RE-0810 for the cone filter and you can get pvc piping at home depot or the like. a 180 t-stat helps a little with the cooling of the truck. you can change out the plugs and wires(plugs recommended: autolite 3923/ any wires). this is getting a little long so just go to speedtweeks.com, truckperformance.com, krcperformance.com and check out your options. good luck, and enjoy your kota.

Message: I agree with toxic on all of that, I have had a few problems with mine over the last three years but I still love my truck after:
6 - Catalytic Converters
2 - Exhaust manifolds
3 - Thermostat Housings
The exhaust system on the V6 Dakota's suck so I would all start looking into headers (JBA), High-flow Cat (Speedtweaks.net), & Catback (Gibson). Also go ahead and get the IAT Adjuster from Speedtweaks.net, it is only like $35. From now on guys I will mostly be posting in our V6 Forum!!! Gotta love it a forum for just V6's!!!! Now we don't always have to hear the comments "GET A V8".

Message: Sorry CrazyDave I think the s10's got ya beat little lighter and more power, I'm leasing an s10 4 cylinder on my way to step up to a Dakota, but a buddy of mine owns a 3.9 and he barely walked away, when my truck was in the shop they gave me a v6 extended cab 4x2 and that thing flew, I raced my buddy again and wasn't even a challenge. I hope this doesn't veer you away from a Dakota, but if I post a question I would like it to be answered right, I don't need to hear a line BS because someone is stuck on a particular make.
