Both the 4.7 and the 5.7 were on the drawing boards before Mercedes ever came into the picture. The 1999 Jeep had the 4.7L. Mercedes and Chrysler didn't merge until May 1998. That would have given them about 3 months to design a new engine, put it into production, and put it in the Grand Cherokee. That didn't happen. The 4.7L was on the drawing board long before Mercedes even expressed interest in Chrysler.

I own a 2001 Ranger XLT Supercab 4x4, with the 4.0L and manual transmission. Took it to the local dragstrip, and ran a best of 16.0 at 82mph. The truck is totally stock, and I have the timeslip at home. I am actually selling the Ranger this week, and have ordered a 2004 Dakota Club Cab 4x4 with the 4.7L manual. Has anybody taken their 4x4 4.7L Dakota down the strip? I would be very surprised if the Dakota is any quicker than the Ranger, due to the fact that is weighs about 500 pounds more.

Stock for Stock I have beaten 5 Rangers all of which are 4.0s.
I even beat a Thunderbolt Ranger 4.0 with its custom exhaust and air intake, and beat him badly.
2 of those kills are friends of mine which are desperately searching their Ranger Station board for online buddie that can produce a bottled ranger to try to beat my Dak.

OK i hate to break it to you dakota lovers but, i have a 04 supercab 4.0L auto Ranger Edge 4x2 , stock at the strip my truck did 14.8 at 90mph. And no i don`t have the bottle or supercharger.. the truck will now be mid 14`s though because i have since added a built dts rear end and flowmaster exhaust. If you don`t believe me come down to louisiana and i will show you. I use to like dakotas till i got my ranger. i have raced many R/T`s and slowly walked them. The owners are amazed after i pop my hood to see its stock. I run at no problem raceway in bell rose louisiana if anyone wants to meet up..Also i have a 100shot of NX on the way so i should be low 13`s soon... Dakotas are very nice trucks. ya`ll have just been miss informed.. all the 4.0`s yall have talked about or OHV motors, in 2001 ford redesigned to the SOHC motor with 210hp. These trucks are very inpressive and with good drivers can put down some very good numbers.. IF ya`ll do wanna meet up email me and we`ll make a date and time. Seriously... the thunderbolt ranger was an 04 and the edge 4.0 4x2 that my other friend owns in a 03. Whipped them both countless times. I live along a 10 lane wide road that is pretty much a drag strip for camaros/firebirds/vipers/Mercedes 55AMGs/Lambos ect ect. I live near some seriously rich people, and there are no lack of 4.0 rangers trying to prove something with nothing. I haven't been beat yet, and I have the same mods as a Thunderbolt Ranger. I even have 3.55 in the rear end.. imagine the graves If i had a LS 4.10.

The dodge does have more horse power but its heavier and has a different gear ratio. A 2001 and up Ford ranger with a 4.10, extended cab, and 4.0 will run the 0-60 in about 7.2 seconds......thats 3/10 of a second faster than a Tiburon GT and I know there is no dodge truck on the road except the SRT-10 that is gonna hold its own against one of those little tiburons......im drivin an '03 Explorer with the 4.0......it does have 3 more horse than the ranger but weighs about 500 to 600 lbs more. I've rolled up next to one of those Dodge Hemi extended cab....didnt beat him...but didnt lose either....neck and neck all the way to the next light......beleive me dodges wimpy little 4.7 isnt gonna stand a chance next to one of them Hemis. Oh yeh my g/f's mother has a 2003 tiburon GT auto and that 2800 lb 171 horse power piece of Korian plastic couldnt even move past my 4200 + lb 210 horse power explorer......and i thought those were supposed to be a sports car....i dont have any problem pulling a V6 camaro or mustang either......fords trucks' magic is all in their transmission.....it has to be......Toyota's Tacoma 4.0 has 245 horse power and does a 10 second 0-60....shame.....so its very possible that ranger pulled past that 4.7 as stock.....the engine isnt evertyhing.....neither is weight.....gearing is just as, if not more, important roll. and beleive it or not the 5 speed automatic on the new rangers is quicker than the manual.

Drew you'd just about have to make the stock horsepower rating at the rear wheels to run that time. Obviously you or someone you know owns a digital camera, so how about posting up that timeslip. I'll give Ford credit with that engine, it runs stout but not that stout. Not stock anyways.

My Neon ran 15.8 bone stock. With just an MP PCM 55MM TB, Iceman, underdrive pulley and a Quaife LSD I can no run the 1/4 in 15.5. This is with much negative camber up front for Auto-cross. I have been passed by stock or near stock 5.2 Magnum and 4.7 %-speed Dakota's. I haven't been up against a Ranger but Drew's numbers don't add up.

Drew's 14.8@90 seems very quick for the Ranger, considering my 2001 4x4 Ranger with the manual tranny only ran a 16.0@82. There is only about 250 pounds between a 4x2 and 4x4 Ranger.
Having said that though, I don't believe Mr Sleepy has whipped any 2001 and up 4.0 Rangers with a stock Dakota, unless the Rangers were driven by tools.
I have had my 2004 Dakota 4x4 4.7 manual for 10 months now, and from driving it every day, I doubt that it could beat the 16.0@82 that I ran in my '01 Ranger. I'll try to get it to the track this spring, to see how it compares to the Ranger. Timeslips don't lie!

I will probly be over that way around July to get a chassis inspection on my Duster. I will be dragging it with my Dakota. I will keep this little post in favorites so I can keep you updated as to when I will be at No Problem Race Way for a fact, it may be sooner. I will come down on a Friday and run you, just a way to offset my fuel costs to drive from San Antonio, TX, you aint scared are you for a couple hundred, I'm not. I wanna see this exceptional Turd Rumper, err Ford Ranger in person. Ask around the board, if I say I will be there, I will. Bring your freinds and family 'cause everyone like to see someone feast on Crow.

the ranger 4.0 has 207 horsepower,the 4.7 has 235 horse,similar in weight but the 4.7 will win,a 14.8 in a stock ranger,what kind of drugs are you on? Now the 5.9 R/T's run around there stock most slower,so your saying a bone stock 4.0 V-6 ranger is faster than a reg cab Dakota R/T? You must have a "freak" from the factory to be able to run around 1.5 seconds faster than any other stock ranger.You should make some calls and get this known that your ranger is only topped by the SRT-10 Ram and Ford Lightning,There should be a sport truck shootout with the SRT-10,Lightning and your "Freak" Ranger.With a 100 shot of Nos your otherwise stock Ranger is going to be low 13's wow. So let me guess with the juice you will take out any stock lightning or Ram? Normally a 100 shot with a stock Ranger would put it in the low 15 sec range,but hey what do I know,you have the ultimate midsize sport truck in that Edge,does it have the gay Edge sticker on it as well,I've heard rumors from D.C that,that added as much as a vortec good for 80 horsepower,get the Ranger to some shows and let the word out,I never knew this until now

Matt u dont have a freakin clew what the hell ur talking about. I have a o3 4x4 quad cab slt with the 4.7 litter V8. I have a borla exuast coming straght out the muffler. My girlfriend has a 05 toyote tacoma quad cab 2 wheel drive 245 hp v6. HER TRUCK WILL FLAT OUT SPANK MY ASS. I have only lost to two vehicles mustang gt and her truck. She will have about a one truck lead up through first gear but the second she hits second and i hit second gear she flat out walks away from me. I have never ever the only truck i no of that fast is my dads 6.0L turbo diesel truck with performance chip. I LOVE MY DODGE BUT PEOPLE WE HAVE TO REALIZE THAT DODGE SUCKS A SAVING WEIGHT AND AS A RESOULT I GET BEAT BY A TRUCK THAT IS JUST AS BIG AS MINE BUT HAS A V6. And the new dakota is even hevier than mine is dodge is stupid.

03qc4.74x4, the reason why your GF's truck will spank yours is because its a 2wd and it weighs 3810 lbs and our trucks weigh about 4200 lbs. Thats about a 400lb difference. Now if you were to race a 4wd version of the Tacoma that would be different because it weighs in at 4045 lbs thats comparing apples to apples and is only a 150lb difference. To me a 4wd vs 2wd is not even comparable. But thats my opinion. Also I dont agree that a Ranger bone stock can run 14.8, what r u smoking and pass some over here.

Also I think that racing a 4wd truck, no matter what manufacturer is like pissing in the wind. There made for offroading!!!!!

I weighed my truck on a scale accuate to 40 lbs. and it came to 4984 with me in it and 1/4 tank of fuel. I have an '04 4.7 QC 4x4. So Im thinking its a bigger difference than people think. I had a reg. cab Toyota 4x4 that weighed in at 3400 lbs. with me and 3/4 tank in it.

Yeah I heard our QC 4X4's weighed closer to 5000 as well.
I was stuck in the mud once and a "TOY" on 35's thought he'd pull me out.
had the tow strap hooked up and all he did was bounce around and not even budge my Dak.
And when I've pulled the "TOY's" out all i had to do was touch the throttle and it jerked them things out like nothing.
Definitely closer to 2K diff!
