If I am gonna spend the extra $$ on synthetic oil, I should spend the extra on a better oil filter? I am considering mobil 1 syn oil for our 4.7L.

what "better" oil filter should I consider?

I've heard excellent things about Mobil 1's oil filter. I use their filter and Mobile 1 Tri-Synthetic oil.

I would stick with the Mobil 1 Syn. filter since you allready have the oil. The 2 products are probably designed to be used together

I just changed over last night. To the Mobil 1 Synthetic, and their expensive filter. looks like it is all high quality stuff. I would recomend it. ACtually started a lot better then with the crap that came in it when I bought the truck (penzoil I'm guessing).

Mobil-1 or WIX. Both are excellent Oil Filters.

What about Fram? I've been using them for years with good luck. An independant test I read a few years ago showed that of the filters tested, Fram had the best filtering (filtered out the smallest particles) AND had the highest flow capacity.
As for a filter for synthetics, they filter synthetics just like they do regular oil. Paying more for a filter for synthetics is like buying a Poweraid spacer - a waste of money. I have been using synthetic oils for years with mostly Fram filters at $3.00 ea. No problems to date with engines that we have torn down that was caused by oil or lack of filtering.

Every lab test will be slightly different...the best recommendation I can give is use what you feel comfortable with. My dad always used Fram, I've either used WIX, or Mobil-1.

I do have a Fram X2 Filter on my truck right now...wanted to see how the anti-drain back valve works as compared to the regular Fram filters...always had a problem after the truck sat for 3+ days...lifters "clacking" for a few seconds on startup. (The WIX and Mobil-1 filters don't have that problem...the X2 doesn't seem to either.)

"the spin-on filter adapters do not have a pressure relief bypass valve. As such, it is imperative that the spin-on filter itself must have a pressure relief valve built into it. Also the spin-on filter may or may not have an anti-drain back check valve. This is recognizeable as a rubber flap that covers the perimiter holes in the filter at the attachment end. A filter used with the inverted adapter should have the anti-drain back valve. For the hanging filter installations the anti-drain back valve is not imperative, but may still be of some benefit to retaining oil in the engine block. "
