I was driving to get onto a bridge and had to stop at the red light. Next to me is an Audi A6 4.2. I needed to get into his lane so i thought I could just give a bit more gas than usual and pass him. Just as the light turns green i go, as I check my blind spot i see him coming up fast thinking I wanted to race him. Needless to say i punched the truck into WOT. Both cars were pretty much head to head for awhile until I began to pull about 1/8 of the truck length ahead. at the stop light after the bridge, this guy rolls his window down and says he never thought trucks are that fast. I guess I changed his idea of the hard-working slow moving pick-up trucks.

Great victory Surfer! But just to warn you,don't lay money down on the next A6 with the 4.2 . I think that you got the jump on him and maybe he just wasn't a good driver. I have a A8 with the same 4.2 and in the 1/4 mile it is just as fast as my truck with my 100hp nitrous shot. They can surprise ya.

If what you say is true, the Audi was toying with you. The 4.2 is a 5-valve per cylinder (40 valves), 300 HP V-8. No contest.

The fastest Audi by far is the S4. In the most current edition of Road and Track they ran one against a Subie WRX. The WRX beat it 0-60 and in the 1/4 mile. The fastest Audi made ran a 14.2 1/4 mile. If this A6 was an auto it is not even in the 14's. The Caddy STS is also 300 HP with more torque but the fastest ones (95-97) were barely in the 14's, the current ones are low 15's. Bottom line the only stock audi (which 99% of then probably are) I personally would worry about would be an S4, unless we were racing in the rain!

Okay, has onyone in the above posts driven any of those Audi's? the only Audi's our 4.7L trucks will beat are A4 1.8L and 2.8L cars, A6 2.8L and A6 wagon. Every other Audi will bend over a Dakota. the S4 will spank the Subie he was talking about and give a 911 Porsche a run for the money. I ahve driven all of the above listed cars, yes out trucks are fast but nothing compared to the German tuners.

Hersbird, ever heard of the S8? I would give my left leg for one of those..then I'd have to have an auto though...
I thought about an Audi A4 1.8T actually before I got into a Dakota...but I didn't want the part costs and insurance hurt. I still want an S4 however.

I have driven a 2001 A6 4.2, yes there was a bit of power, but not at fast as the 2.7Turbo. The salesman even told me at best the 4.2 run to 60mph around mid to low 7 seconds. while the 2.7 Turbos are low six seconds. So I would say the 4.7 dak has a good chance against an 4.2 A6 (mind you this A6 had quattro) Even the S4 has quattro so i don't see how you can beat it in the rain. The WRX is a very close competitor to the S4(2.7T engine) and I wouldn't be surprise to see it beat it.

All I'm posting is actual magazine test results and the WRX is equal in some slightly slower in some but in all the back to back tests with the same drivers and tracks the WRX has been faster then the S4. The S8 is also sweet but still not as fast (at least in US trim) as the S4. This WRX is the built to the dismay of the Audi croud, sure it's missing some of the Audi's creature comforts but it can be had for as low as $23,000. Maybe Audi should make some stuff optional on the S4 to lower the price to compete with the WRX, honestly unless you just have money to burn, why would anybody spend $17,000 more for the S4? Think of the mods and customization that could be had on the WRX. Audi has also only been putting the good motors in the A6 for 1.5 years, it has to be a 2000 or better to even have the possibility of having the 2.7T or 4.2. I do think the road tests on the 2.7T have been faster then the 4.2, still a 2.7T A6 may be good for mid 14's but then again so is my Dakota, and it only cost $17,000 and looks better IMO. Granted if I had $40,000 just buring a hole in my pocket I'd consider the S4... and then buy a WRX and put it in full STi trim except for the 6-speed, and then still have over $5000 to mod my Dakota!

Id go with the bmw m3 all the way. Over 300+ Hp and 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. Yea baby! With its 6 cylinder. But i do like the look of the new audi cars.

Not the Quattro....the 2-wheel drive.

Put a BMW in any condition besides a sunny day, and the a Audi with Quattro will be all over it. M3's are nice, but I would take a S4 long before a M3 (that is unless I could have my Dak AND the M3...)

I have seen audi's A4s run with the turbo v6 run mid-high 13sec@102 at englishtown on open track night. The thing stayed with a rx7 that go off the line slow.

You stayed ahead of the A-6 just because he was seein' what kinda balls the truck had. He was toying with ya. What balls the truck did have may have impressed him, he had to mash it a little harder than he expected he would.
I drive everyday here in Germany with my DAK, and have seriously tried to pull on these 4.2L A-6's, just to shake my head and watch them faid off in the distance. That's from the stand still, on the Auto-Bahn I've been hard pressed at 135 MPH and had the A-6's almost rock me off the road when they go buy at 175 to 180 MPH. That's the Station Wagon Grocerie Getters. With dad or grand dad at the wheel, I've even seen a mom or grandma or two driving these things like that.
He was havin' fun in his Grocerie Getter messin' with ya. All I can say is have fun.

yeah that really doesn't sound like a realistic kill ... I've personally raced my friend's WRX and he blew my doors off once the turbo spooled up (although I was pretty happy with how well I kept up before his turbo kicked in).
The closest race I've had was with my friend's Monte Carlo SS ... I was beating him by a fender length before we both let off at about 120 km/hr (in a 70 zone). I'm particularly proud of that kill since he was convinced he would beat me.
Like someone said, we're fast ... for a truck. And we can surprise a lot of people.

I was speeding on our biggest highway, the 401 with a silver TT beside me. We were even for quite a while, and I got my dak up to my fastest speed yet, 185 kms. I think the guy in the TT was surprised that a V6 dak could do that well, he gave me the thumbs up when he sailed past me and into the sunset.

Kind of an old post but interesting reading.
I've recently got an A6 4.2 auto (researching it is where I found this old thread) and with the stats on that 4.7L Dakota I don't believe the Audi driver was playing around.
Performance from the 2 vehicles is (for all intents and purposes) identical up to 1/4 mile.
Where he's got you beat is once you get past that 1/4 mile marker because the Audi top speed (in US) is 130 mph compared to your sub-120. In Europe we have it a little easier because the speed limiter only kicks in at 155mph. ;-)

also in germany they don't have the smog restrictions, so the guy that has the dak in germany may be really outmatched, unless they take all that stuff off when they import the dak to germany.
