Subject: tire size on 98' sport rims IP: Logged
Message: i've got a 98' sport with the stock rims and i was wondering what the widest tire i could put on was. i have a 70 series tire on now (245/70) and i want to go with a 65 or 60. is this possible on the 6" wide rims on my truck. also i want to go with lower profile tires, any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Message: On my 97 SLT the stock rims are 7" wide. I haven't seen any Gen III with less than 7. he early optional tire/wheel was 8" before they went to 16s.
I am running 255/60-15 Pirelli Scorpion Zeros. Fit quite well and great traction. The height is about .3" shorter on the sidewall. Doesn't affect the speedometer too much. (At a true 60mph your speedo will indicate 61.5mph). This is comparing to the OEM 215/75-15 tire.
I like these tires enough that when the time comes I will put 255/65/15 on my 01 to replace the 235/75-15 on that one. Will be about the same speedo error. Oh, if you use the 65 series to replace the 215s you'll get about .3 taller and speedo error will be opposite so that when going 61.5 itt will read 60mph.
The width of the 255 fits beautifully on the OEM 7" rim. The tread is flat, good even wear and does not stick out beyond the fenders so flares aren't needed. No offense to those with flares but they look added on. If I want flares I would rather have them molded in. Just my 1 1/2 cents worth
This link will help you with tire sizes.

Message: I was sure that the stock 15" (split spoke) wheels are 8" wide. Mine came stock with 235/50/15's now I am running 225/50/15's. As for going wide I would think that you could fit 255's on them.

Message: mine aren't the split spoke. the sport rims are, i'm pretty sure, 15x6. at least that's what the sticker in the drivers side door jam says.

Message: The series is only the side wall of the tire so you could put a 40 series on the rim the only thing is that your speedo will be off the higher or lower you go with side walls so for exp. p2356015 the 235 is how wide the tire is and the middle # 60 is the hieght the 60 is 60% of235 thats how they get the numbers.

Message: In 97 and 98 the stock alloy rim (5 spoke, NOT split and painted silver) and the stock stamped metal rim are 15 X 7. The split spoke is the optional wheel at the time, part of the tire and handling package, are 15 X 8. Don't know when they made the optional 16" But I do know about the 97 and 98 stock rims. Wanted to get the tire and handling package on my 97 SLT but that year you could only order the package on the Sport. The lines have blurred much more since then.
Either way. The Door sticker is wrong. You have 7" wide rims. (Measure the rim if you don't or can't believe me.)Technically you can fit a 275 on it but in my opinion that is too wide for the rim. I like some support on my sideways. I persoinally feel that 255 id about the max I would go on them. Then again. Another good tire is the 235/70-15 Dunlop Sport Rover GTX. (Same diameter as OEM 215/75-15)

Message: I had the 15x8's on my 98 sport... they came with 235/70's, then in 99 they went to 255/65. So, when it came time for new tires, I went 255/60.
I have some pics of it on my site. I have the R/T rims and tires now =]

Message: OK, Here is the scoop. The factory 5-spoke alloy Sport rims like the ones pictured on my 1998...
...Are described by Chrysler as 15x7". In reality, the ACTUAL masurement is 15x7 1/2"; as measured from bead-to-bead on the inside wheel lips, (as is the standard method of width measurement on wheels).
This is not un-usual for Chrysler products- My '71 Road runners 14x5.5" Rallye wheels actually measure 14x6", and the factory 15x8" Ramcharger/Trailduster wheels I have for my '70 Challenger RT/SE really measure 15x8 1/2".
This being said, You can go as large as a 31x10.5x15 (off-road/floatation), or a P275-60R15
in tire size. I chose to stay with the stock 235-75R15's on my Dakota because that size fits the rim size better without messing with inflation pressure too much to get proper tire wear, and the 235's should give me better MPG (a lot less weight for my V-6 to turn!).
Just my 2 cents, I hope this helps!
John
P.S. I have been in the tire business for 14 years now.

Message: John, thank you for the info:),I have looked at all kinds of tires in p255-60r15 and found the goodyear indy 500s and the BFG TA'S were reasonably priced and these tires fit my budget. I would like All-tarrain TA's but my dodge is lowered 2/3 but the sport tires do just fine:). I think the BFG TA's will be a good choice. thank you:) john/98 dodge dakota
