Subject: me VS a SC'd tacoma...what do you think? IP: Logged
Message: some guy in my neighborhood told my friend that he wants to race me. not for cash or anything, he just wants to know how fast his truck is compaired to another.
his mods are: (just what i know, he might have more)
98 tacoma, supercharged v6, 5speed (i think)exhaust, and he is running a de-arched mono leaf spring with an air ride suspencion, on 18" rims
my mods are:
98 5.2, 5speed, 3.62 posi (my rim/tire brings the 3.55 to a 3.62), 14" k&n intake, 50mm TB, 1.7 rockers, 180 t-stat, 3923's, and mopar cat-back.
my best time without the 1.7's was 14.92@92mph
I think he will beat me because his truck is lighter, but he is running a mono leaf, so i think he will have major wheel hop. What do you guys think?

Message: Wow, A SC 3.4L? Is he crazy? That's a 9.6:1CR ratio engine. It's either a very quick Tacoma or a bad running one.
Possible setups:
He has a rebuilt engine that has a reduced CR, SC With Intercooler, new rear clogs with LSD or posi and a good centerforce clutch system. New engine management system. Now that would beat you.
Now the setup you say his running, that 9.6:1 cr with forced air would cause major ping unless he running very very low boost. Second I think Tacoma's come with an open diff.
Well, if you can do 14's you might be him.
Aren't Tacoma's 16 second trucks? Just go race him and see.

Message: Well actually these Toyotas handle those superchargers very well. It depends on his injectors. My best freind has a T100 with the same engine as the Tacoma and it has the TRD supercharger, TRD headers and exhaust, GM 4 core radiator, and Downey intake. He also has the boost gauges inside. I have driven this truck thousands of miles myself b/c of road trips etc. It runs very well. He has gone through three rearends and two trannies, but Toyota gladly replaced them for free. Now here is where the problem comes in. We live at 6000 feet and about 45000 of his miles were at this altitude, then we moved to sea level, SAn Luis Obisbo, CA. He wasn't putting enough fuel in the engine and he aluminized his exhaust the hard way. He was running so lean at sea level it wasn't funny. Those engines will run like mad especially in those Tacomas.
I know this is a Dakota post but if anyone is ever curious about those Toyotas shoot my buddy an email
jwelch@calpoly.edu
He is one smart man.
Just thought that might help, of my 2000 4.7L 4x4 Dak w/ 3.92 and 5spd spanked his T100. Mine was stock.

Message: Uhhh, I think you might get smoked. There was a SCed Tacoma at the track a couple of weeks ago and it was running 14.60s. That was in bad conditions here in the heat of the desert. I'm sure that it would run close to 14.0s with decent air. You might as well give him a shot though....

Message: Hey man, so someone on you're street heard about the info, and facts that you gave me, when I had mentioned something about racing a toy. No I have'nt raced him yet but the time is coming, I decided that I was going to put my 70mm TB from Bernd on first, and then if he want's some, then he came get what he has been asking for! So,now you think that you want to race one, and on top of that, he has a s/c. With you're mods, and his, I'm pretty sure that he would win, but, both of you do have 5spd's, you have one tough V8, belive me I use to have a 318ci, and they are great motor's, nice size ponies, w/ not a lot of weight!,and his V6 s/c, with a few more mods you should be right up there with him if not in front of him. Hey, have you got a 50mm TB, if not get one. But if I were you I would get a few more mods, before you race him, because you have to think, he has this little, lite weight truck that weighs around, 3200 to 3450 lbs, and on top of that he has a s/c, and is talking junk,....,well what-do-yah expect????...uh...now if he would allow you to put a s/c on you're truck, thennnn, that would be another story, with no questions asked. But take my advice, I would get my hands on a few more mods, and take advantage of his remark (making it even, in another words). But if you have any questions write back or write me at: justinphillips_28146@yahoo.com
see yah,

justin, yes i do have a 50mm TB, and i know he might win. he wasnt talking crap, and he dosent want to race for money. he just wants to see how his truck stacks up against a v8.
I just hope that with him running a mono leafspring that he will have major wheel hop and i will have the advantage. im not expecting to win. just hoping

Message: I think your Dakota with mods should be good for much better then 14.92 even before the 1.7's. It seems like you setup driven just right would go mid 14's. If his setup were driven just right I think he still couldn't hang. My basically stock 93 5.2 auto with 3.55 gears went 14.9 with just the MP PCM, no exhaust from the cat back, and all the bumper, spare, and tailgate removed. This was on 215-75/15's!. The 5-speed and traction on that truck would have gone 14.5's easy with no other mods. Maybe you need to put your truck on a diet first.

Message: Usually it goes about a second per 100hp on these trucks. Other mods done only get multiplied by the scer. I have heard of 1.7 rrs giving 3 tenths on a Scerd r/t. I, like Eric aka- king of the hohos, never ran without the scer.
Oh, fwiw I recently discovered a rc scerd tacoma near me that I inevitably will run one of these days. Cant even hear the exhaust, just a crazy electronic whine from the scer.

Message: I think it'll be pretty close.SportTruck magazine had an article last year on installing one on a stock Tacoma w/the 3.4l and they said they ran upon an IROC while cruising(they had an open diff) and off the line it pulled ahead because of their traction issues and by the time they hit 90 they had more than three lengths.
You might win. Good luck.
