i am getting rid of my 14" open element filter, on my 5.2, for a cold air intake. i was just wondering, could i get the same results as the gen II with some pvc pipe and a K&N filter? if the gen II is that much better ill buy it, but if i can acheive the same performance and save $180, ill make my own.

any of you guys with home made intakes have any suggestions?

Eric

dude dont waste your money. you can buy a piece of flex duct and a K&N fir under 40 bucks. air flow is airflow. 40 bucks or 180 take your pick.

Kota on 20s: this is what I've learned from research (no expert, but I do read a lot). If you have the 4.7 and can connect directly to the TB, there is a lot of advantage, however if you have the 3.9 or 5.2, or 5.9, most of the intakes including homemade, hook up to the stock TB hat. Most of what I've read says that the stock hat restricts a bit of airflow. The K&N is all one piece, less obstruction to airflow as there are no elbows and seams, and does away with the stock hat. I guess it depends on how much those little details are worth to you. Kits like Airaid, QuikD & 360 AirIntakez also hook up to the stock hat, except, again with the 4.7. The Volant Air Intake is like the K&N, but freaking expensive. I love the looks of the Air Force One (polished aircraft grade steel) and Quick D (polished steel) they are cheaper than K&N, but they hook up to the stock TB hat. There are so many ways to make home-made intakes on the net, but I haven't found any that don't use the stock TB hat, except again, for the 4.7 model. Here in Canada, the parts are so expensive ($90 for the filter, $15 per elbow) that I just said pi$$ on it, I'll just buy one. K&N here in Canada is from $440-$460. If I order it from Bernd, it will only cost $360 included. Good luck.

I just put together a home built intake just like we've all seen on the net. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet, but I've saved about $180 give or take and since I don't have a whole lot of money in the first place, it works awsome...LOL!!! I'll post my results when I get them in.

Love my home made 4" intake. I painted it threw the K&N sticker that came with the cone filter on it and anyone that has seen it has actually thought I bought it. Works and sound great!!

I have a question for you Eric. What's the best and most affordable way to drop 2" on the front end? I want a 2" 2" drop only for a little better traction and better ET's. I just picked up some Lakewood traction bars today to throw on also. Doubt they will make much dif untill I get sticky tires but they are chrome and will look great. Only $72.00 CAN.

Thanks

hey jeffster, I think you can drop just over an inch by adjusting the torsion bars. Hopefully someone else can either confirm this or otherwise give you a better tip

lesley, i have the 5.2 and the reason that i am debating on the homemade intake is because i dont want to use the stock air hat. i know it is the weakest link in the filter system, but i wonder if there is that much of a differance.

jeffster, go with a 2" dropped coil. it will firm up the ride a little for better cornering and is cheaper and easier than the 2" A-arm. (the ball joints are a b1tch to get out of the stock A-arm)

I think only the 4X4's use a torsion bar front suspension, and they usually are not looking for a drop. The 2wd Dakotas use a coil spring front suspension and new coils is really the only good soultion. Sure you can pull out the torch and take off a few inches but it won't be right after that.

Thanks guys. Eric I think I will go with the coils then. I was very happy with the Bel tech coils I used in my old 94 POS Sonoma. Made for a very nice ride.

Hey, Kota on 20s - I just emailed Bernd for a quote on the K&N, he has by far the best prices. Wonder if he would be into a group buy if other people are interested? What do you think, are you interested?

$235, including shipping. I have done a LOT of research into intakes, it's the best one, and this is the lowest price that I have found. There are others at around that price, but then there is shipping on top. I can order it from him, and it would still cost $100 less than if I bought it from the shop two blocks away ($460 Cnd., Speedtweaks is $360 Cnd). Don't know if he would do a group buy, guess it's worth asking, then posting on the group buy board huh?
I'll email him right now, and get back to you.

I hope you get it! I bid on one last month, slightly used. It ended up going for $86, but they cancelled my bid as it was U.S. only.
I got a call from Tony at Quick D last night, which was a huge surprise, people at moparchat said that he was very hard to get a hold of, and that it would take months to get a part from him. I had emailed him in the summer about a Quick D intake, they look so good, all polished steel & a 9" K&N cone. Soooo, he is sending it to me next week. I can hardly wait to try it out!
Good luck with the K&N

Well, I picked up a 360 intake from 360 Air Intakez off of Ebay about 3 weeks ago for about $125 (they normally sell for $150 plus shipping on their website)

It consisted of ceramic painted mandrel bent aluminized tubing and a 9" K&N filter element. So far so good with the unit... plus it just looks alot nicer than the "sewer pipe" options, not to mention the supposed "heat factor" that can affect the shape of PVC pipe.

Yeah, much as I wanted to try my hand at making my own, sewer pipe was not really the statement I wanted to make with my truck! I also checked out the 360 Air Intakez which is very similar to the Quick D, but I liked the look of the polished steel. (which I am sure will really affect the performance ... don't care, I like it!)

FYI:
The reason a lot of people sell their K&N FIPK on ebay is because of the cracking issue. They tend to crack at the base of the air hat quite easily. K&N is replacing them for free. People are getting their cracked ones replaced and selling the new one that they got from K&N on ebay. They don't want to use them again because they will just keep cracking is what they figure.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone from buying the ones on ebay because if they are new they are just as good as any one you can buy from a store. It is still an awsome product. I just thought that everyone should know why they sell on ebay so often.

No. We have two systems for the 5.2 & 5.9. One is a dual snorkle ram air system and the other is a single snorkle ram air system. We designed and built our own cleaner assembly that houses a 14 x 3 K&N filter. It is a tig welded aluminum design.
