Subject: Exhaust rattle? Listen up!!! IP: Logged
Message: To those of you who have an annoying exhaust
rattle, it could very well be the catalytic
converter. I am on my third and it seems to be
holding up very well compared to the others.
However, I still had the rattle that seemed to
come on when the engine warmed up, in gear, and at
2000 rpms and above. I found the problem yesterday
that may help anyone with the same problem.
Working underneath the vehicle, follow the exhaust
pipe from the left manifold to the area by the
starter. You will notice somewhat of what seems to
be a lame excuse for a heat shield that is
connected to the pipe itself. This piece is 2
inches wide and 6 inches long and curves with the
exhaust pipe. It is spot welded in the four
corners. Mine had two of the welds broken on the
same side. I simply removed it and no more rattle.
Hope this helps.

Message: i was wondering what the hell that noise was mine does it too, i hear nothing until it warms up then i get this stupid rattling but i get it on both sides i thought i might have had an exhaust leak then i thought hmmmmmm it's probably the heat shields on the pre cats so this weekend i'll climb under there and see what i come up with. I hate the dealer and really do not wish to take it to them if i don't have to.

Message: I have a bad rattle when I am riding over small bumps, etc that sounds like a loose muffler bracket (but it is not..already checked). Is this what you are refering to? I cannot find this clicking/rattle noise and it is starting to get annoying.

Message: I found another source of exhaust rattle. It turned out the muffler clamp on the inlet side was too far back and missed the pipe. The bracket held things in position but it rattled and leaked. A potential carbon monoxide problem I might add.

Message: The rattle was found today. It was the heat shield above the cat. It took forever to find it, but it is fixed now. Had the exact same problem on the durango too.

Message: I was having the same problem too..
and i had it looked at and they practically spent the whole day looking for the source of the problem. I have a rattle at about 1200 rpm. They can isolate when it happens but they cant find where its coming from.. but i think im going to take a look where andy suggested it may be from.
