Why do you want to replace motors? High mileage?,problems?..... The 3.9 is a great motor to do mods on, and would be cheaper to replace parts on. But if you are looking for a motor w/ some HP's the 440 is one to talk about. My dad had one in his 69' Charger, w/ 2-4bb carbs on it, take off was kinda slow,(taking into concideration from the size on the vehical), but when it got into the higher rmp's it would haul-some-balls. I dont know what the Dakota would do with that size of a motor, but if you might have head work done to it shaved, ported, pollished, you know the whole9yrd's, w/ oversized cam, roller rocker arms, etc, with the exception of the 4:10 gears, and a good ignition, you will for sure have to install a set a wheelly bars. So if this excites you, then you might want to look into it, also the 408 stroker is a great motor also. www.fastman.com (Dan) told me that he re-builds strokers, and a complete set-up with blower is around $6K-$6500. But other than that you should'nt realy run into that many problem's installing a motor of that size, the only thing you should have to look into is the engine mounting bolts. My dad works at a Dodge dealiership, and asked about the 528 Hemi, and if they make a install kit for the Dakota's, and guess what? they do.

Yeh your right Lando981
those motors are tha bomb, but you have to take into concideration that they are anywhere from $15thou up to $20thou depending on your application, around 15,000$ for a crate motor.
But if you have the money, then all I have to say is..... go for it man!

I THINK YOU SHOULD PUT THE 440 IN. THE HEMI WAS TOO HARD TO KEEP TUNED WITH THE SOLID LIFTER CAM AND DUAL FOUR BARRELS. IF YOU DIDN'T TUNE THE HEMI ALL THE TIME, THE 440 WAS JUST AS STRONG. SO I WOULD GO WITH THE 440. IT IS AN EASY SWAP. SHOULD BOLT RIGHT IN USING SIMPLE HAND TOOLS AND A POWER SANDER. YOU COULD PROBABLY HAVE IT DOEN IN A FRIDAY NITE/SATURDAY MORNING. BE SURE TO USE THE NEW K & N DROP IN FILTER IN THE STOCK AIR CANISTER.

What are you talking about. The 440 was a peice of juck compaired to the 426. The block was weak and they constently broke and got broken rods. It was a good engine but the 426 is just a way better set up. And depending on what carb/intake set up you have not much to tune up. As for the solid lifters it takes less then 1 hour to do this and do it at every oil change. Any one with a 426 in a dakota would not mind doing this. Plus you could probably get a 426 with hydralic lifters and a diffrent cam to avoid all of this of course you will lose some power. But the 426 is a performance engine the 440 was and allways will be a torque work engine.

ARE YOU KIDDING??? PULL THE VALVE COVERS TO RE-LASH THE VALVES EVERY 3000 MILES?? YEAH, THAT'S GONNA BE A LOT OF FUN. SO THE 440 IS A "TORQUE WORK" ENGINE? I GUESS THAT'S WHY DODGE AND PLYMOUTH SOLD ALL THOSE 440 SIX-PAK ROAD RUNNERS AND SUPER BEE'S WITH TRAILER HITCHES AND LUGGAGE RACKS. THAT EXPLAINS IT.

Every company took there big block work engine and made some sort of a performance package out of it. Chevy 454 Ford 460 Dodge 440 but the 426 is a pure race engine ONLY INTENDED TO BE. The bottom line is if you want nothing but pure power 426.

Plus the 440 in the opinion of most chrysler mechanics is that it was a peice of junk that kept throwing rods.

PS. I saw a viper with a trailer hitch!!!

I'm not sure where to start here, the 69 six pac super bee was a 440 not a 426, and your right it would run even with a 426 or anyhting else out there. The 440 magnum was pretty much undestructable as was the 426. The 426 was the greatest musclecar motor ever but the 440 six pac was right there for a lot less, think of the mods the 440 could have before it costs hemi money. You could build a aluminum stroker 440 for less then a stock crate 426 hemi that I guarentee would weigh less and make more power then the 426, there is more potential in a Hemi but you got to be willing to part with a lot of cash to find it as easy as on a 440.

To get 426 HP from a 440 you would need to put a lumpy cam with high compression heads and pistons and probably really strong springs. In order for all this to work you will need a full roller system and probably want solid lifters because hydralic lifters would crush. So you would through all the benifits of the 440 out.

To get a 440 means driving a rebuilt. A 426 can be bought over the parts counter and be brand new and ready to run. And when the truck gets old take the motor out and put the old one back and trade it in.

You know what's funny? The three of us are arguing over two engines from the 60's, both of which are now available as high performance crate motors from Mopar Performance, and both of which cost over $10,000 a piece (assembled). The dude who posted the original comment bought a V-6 Dakota and wants more power. The only Hemi I've seen fit in a street Dakota was built by hand by Troy Trepanier for Hot Rod Magazine and that's a guaranteed $100,000+ custom job. Now, if this V-6 kid could even afford a MOTOR (not the truck truck- just the motor) that cost as much a used Dakota, why would he even be concerned about making more power? He'd have just gone ahead and bought a frickin' Viper and called it a day. God I love this board! It's so informative!

I'm not sure if this applies to GenIII Dak's or not, but I saw an interesting segment on Speedvision a couple of weeks ago. They were interviewing a guy from Mopar Performance at a car show, and he was talking about a complete kit to put a big block in a Dakota. He was talking about GenI trucks. It was a crate motor/tranny and suspension package all in one, straight from Mother Mopar. I think they said it was being produced now, and not just a concept, but I'm not certain. He was saying you could get either a 440 or a 426.

So, the answer to the orignal question is yes, it can probably be done. I looks like a very expensive proposition. A better idea might be to look into getting a 318/360 crate motor and going from there. It would definitely be cheaper and a lot of the parts are probably available from mopar performance. Talk to them, and see what is available.

I know changing out the wiring harness would be a pain, and I think you would need a new tranny, probably new front springs for the weight difference, and either a whole lot of patience or a lot of money to have someone else do the job.

Good Luck!!

Shawn
