Subject: G-Tech accuracy? IP: Logged
Message: I finally got my G-tech this weekend after buying tires from BF goodrich 2 months ago! Well anyway late saturday night I went out to the boonies to do some "research" on the G-tech. I had a full tank of gas so I assumed I would have some extra weight to throw around. The road was perfectly flat so I stoped to do some 0-60 and 1/4 times. It was fairly cool 57 deg so I spun some through hard acceleration. 1st run was poor 0-60 in 7.2 I did not run to 1/4. The second run I spun hard but pulled 0-60 in 6.7 sec and quarter was 15.0 at 94 mph. Not to bad but as you can see by the trap speed I spun! My goal is to get the spin under control to get mid to high 14's. Slicks may help! As always this site rules keep up the good commentary.
I have a 99 dak r/t CC w/ mopar pcm low temp thermo autolite 3923 cold air induction kit roll pan w/ all spare tire components removed. Also reline full synthetics throughout. Rubber- BF goodrich g-force KDWS

Message: According to their website they're more accurate then the track. I don't know. I Live in the middle of nowhere, that's the only way to find out what my ride can do. I'll be getting one on the 19th (my B-Day). She can't see why I'd want one. (I can't see why she find china patterns so facinating...Go Figure!) 6.7 0-60 is pretty sweet. Let me know how you do.

Message: I've used a G-Tech at the track. Using it there let me compare the accuracy of the G-Tech versus the timeslips. The G-Tech was within a tenth of a second on the 1/4 mile times but was always about 3 mph too high on the speeds. So judging by the accuracy of the one I used and the results you got..... you should be right at 15.0 and 91 mph.

Message: The g-tech will always read a little high on the 1/4 mile speed (in comparison to a time slip at a track) because the g-tech measures your speed at exactly the 1/4 mile mark. The 1/4 mile tracks show a "trap speed" that is based on the length of time it takes your vehicle to pass through two timing lights a known distance apart at the end of the track. I say it's a known distance...the people who set up the track know what it is, but I don't have a clue.

Message: Although the accelerometer method can be quite accurate, the track can always be more accurate (ET wise) because it's using fixed points of reference rather than just forces given by the acceleration of the unit.
IMO, they would be accurate enough to do comparison tests like before and after upgrade, or to just get an idea of your performance. But I would not have enough faith to say car A outperformed car B by 0.01 seconds.

Message: The G-tech speed is the actual speed you are running at the instant you cross the 1/4 mile line, not an average over the last 60 or so feet as timed by lights. Also at the track you are not starting in exactly the same spot every time, the beams will alloy a few feet of travel at the starting line before the clock starts. You couldn't judge a race with a G-tech because you can't take into account redlighting or reaction times, but if you passed the same G-tech from 1 car to another and did back to back runs I think it would be fair to call a winner based on G-tech times. The accelerometer is super accurate and it's just a math problem for it to get the distance travelled and speed.

Message: www.gtechpro.com for information.
You can buy them from many places. summitracing.com for one. Price runs about $140.

Message: My main concern wasn't repeatability with the unit, but how accurate it is vs. the real world values. I'd assume lights on the track are calibrated to a standard (ie: NIST) but unless the Gtech comes with a certificate of calibration it can't exactly be assumed to be dead on.

Message: Actually it claims that its upto 10 times more acurate than the strip. It's really very ingenius. It continually measures acceleration and time. It calibrates itself by comparing itself to the constant acceleration of gravity and most quartz time pieces are very accurate. So by measuring acceleration over time you get speed by measuring speed over time you get distance. Now, the cool part you enter the weight of your ride over acceleration you get horse power. I think the thing that can throw it off is whether or not you're on a level road. Any ways it ought to be a fun toy to play with. If only there was a way to interface it with PC-can you just imagine all the charts and graphs you could make! (Ok Q your sounding like a geek-reel it in son!)
