My wife and I are thinking of buying a red 2001 Durnago RT this week. I just want to ask if anyone has had trouble with them or anything i should know before i drop a piece of change like that...

I myself own a 2000 Dakota RT CC Black and have never had any trouble with it. I just added a Gen II K&N kit to it but am waiting to see the verdict on it but so far, so good. I also took everyone's advice and dumped a $60 set of Bosch Platinum +4's and went with the Autolite 3923's. I like 'em; i think they will stay.

I appreciate any input on this. Thanks.

Josh,

I'm doing just the flip of what you have. Bought the 2001 Durango R/T 2 weeks ago and will hopefully getting a 2002 Dakota R/T once they hit the lots in the next week or two.

One minor annoyance I found was the later builds(after Feb. 2001) had the underhood insulation and some of the interior courtesy lights removed. You'll also find that the Durango R/Ts only come with the 8.25 rear end. The first items are trivial, but the latter might be an issue down the road. You can browse durangoclub.com for additional tips and information.

Good luck.

Bob

Thanks Bob. Question, what is wrong with the rear end? Do they not hold up or is there a mechanical flaw or what? Also, what kind of mileage are you getting? Ours will be an around-town Durango but we might take the occasional road trip.

Thanks again...

There is nothing wrong with the rear end on the durango R/T he is just dissapointed that it doesnt come with the bigger one. But the 8.25 is a bigger axle then whats on the chevy tahoe so dont worry about it. I am buying a Durango R/T soon. Right now i own a durango 5.9 slt plus that i drove the piss out of and it has over 200000 miles not one problem. So the R/T should be fine.

Cool. Do you happen to know how the 4.7L Durangos are holding up? I just got off the phone with the dealer and the price is changing out of my favor. SoI might have to reconsider the RT and go with an SLT.

Josh,

Why would the price be changing _out_ of your favor? End of the model year. Dealer's have incentives to move exess inventory. Everything is in your favor and from a dealer perspective, an R/T is just another Durango. Dealers around my area advertise $7-$8K off the MSRP. If they are advertising that without effort on your part, you just go in even lower to start. Play hardball with these clowns. You're in the driver's seat(no pun intended).

Save your money and buy a Acura orr something that gets better gas mileage and better reliability. The Dakotas are sweet but the Durango costs 35K. Thats a big chunk of cash for somehting that gets 12mpg. We own a 5.9L Jeep and boy is it thirsty. But its your choice.

Well folks, looks like we are gonna buy a Durango SLT. Anyone had trouble with the 4.7's? I had a 5.2 Durango and never had trouble. Still have no trouble from my Dakota.

HELP ME! I am in a tight spot people! I just want to make sure I spend my $$$ on the right thing...

Joshman,

Have had 01 Durango R/T since April. Love the truck. Believe the R/T will hold value better and is a lot better looking and more fun to drive. I got the Garnet color and have had a lo of positive comments on how good it looks. Like the slightly lower stance and exhaust sound is much better.

Did have problem with front end differential (whine), but was repaired quickly under warrenty.

I am getting 14 to 15 mph in mixed driving which seems to be better than some of the other posts I have read.

Hope this helps.

In May we purchased 2001 Red Dodge Durango. We also own a Honda Accord Ex. We have 4 kids and love the Durango for family trips...But we fight over the Durango for commuting. Yes, the gas mileage is about 14mpg but what a way to travel in style! The throaty growl and great acceleration ( This truck will kick the butt of any other SUV) makes me comfortable with paying the extra few thousand and paying the extra gas money to avoid the mundane minivan masses.

ShawErica, you are absolutely right about the Durango (SLT not RT). It is my wife's vehicle and it takes a good bit of convincing for me to get the keys from her. We are driving it to Atlanta this weekend on our first long trip in it. Should be very comfy. So far, mileage is as expected, 13-14 mpg but worth every gas-guzzling drop...

I cannot believe how smooth the tranny shifts on the 4.7! My Dakota 5.9 is not like that, but i want and love my hard shifts.

it's available for the 2002. It's an option like power windows I guess. If you go to the dodge website as your building a Dakota, in the 4x2 selection you'll eventually have the option of adding the R/T package.

Josh, I have a Durango 4.7 and love it. I preferred it over the 5.9 in test drives. I know the 5.9 has more power, but the 4.7 has better throttle response, and is much smoother. I was (and am) so impressed with it, I bought a Dakota 4.7 Quad Cab.

Do they not offer R/T 4x4s for Durangos? Here in a very Chrysler town I bet 8of10 Durango R/Ts are 4X4s.

ShawErica, and Josh Lee; some advice to you and everyone. Don't try and "kick the butt" of any V8 Grand Cherokees or your bubble will burst.

I've heard from owners and others that the 5.9L Grand Cherokees are awesome. They have all of the power of the 5.9 Durango but none of the excess weight. One here in town, the owner said was left outside in a snow storm and was buried in a drift to the grill and she just put it in 4Lo and hopped the drift. Just sweet. I like the durangos too, though, less graceful with the power but there's more than enough power.

My understanding is that all of the Durango R/T's are full-time all wheel drive, with 4 low available.

I've seen a few without any 4X markings sitting a bit lower than the 4Xs. But here 4WD is everything,(by choice, not forced by nature) so if they're are any 2WDs they're 1% of the pop.
