Subject: lowering 4x4 dakota? IP: Logged
Message: Is it possible to lower a Dakota 4x4 (98 and up)? I live up in Minnesota and would really like the traction of 4x4 for the winters. Not to worried about clearance being as I will be mostly driving interstate and major hwys. Just worried about sliding all over. I rode in a friends of mine (2wd) and he was all over the place even with some high traction winter tires. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Shawn

Message: Lowering a 4X4?? I think that should be illegal. You want to lower it just for the looks or what?

Message: The best traction device is common sense. Don't use the go pedal so much. It would cost a lot of money to lower a 4x4 b/c someone would have to fabricate parts, the only thing out there for 4x4s is lift kits.

Message: you could get a little lower by cranking the front torsion bars down and taking a spring or two out of the back

Message: I saw them lower a 99 durango 4x4 on Motortrend Trucks so it is possible. They did it because 4x4 handle better than 2wd. hence why porches are 4wd. Anyways i'm sure the same kit would work for you. Try there web site for info.

Uhhhh...that's AWD...not 4WD for the Porsche. And their driveline is a lot more complicated/sophisticated than a 4x4.

Message: Thanks everyone for their input. With your postings and some other research I have done I have found that it is nearly impossible to lower a 4x4. I think I will just have to settle with some other mods and leave the suspension alone. We just had a pretty decent snowfall this past weekend (10") and my bosses plow truck, 96 RAM 4x4 with 3" of lift went through a hell of a lot of snow while we were plowing. Thanks again, Shawn

Message: I am also intrested in lowering my Dakota. I do remember the motortrend Durango, I think it had a 3/3 drop. I also heard that some company I don't remember the name was making an airbag kit for torsion bars. If anybody has any info. on this please let me know.
