Subject: 3.9 or 4.7?
IP: Logged

Message:
First time poster, long time Dodge owner :)

I am currently in the market for a 2001 Dakota. I'm kind of tossed between purchasing the 3.9 or the 4.7 teamed up with the 5sp in the 4x4 configuration. I am looking for some performance, but mainly using the truck as a utility machine/Daily Driver. Which motor would you guys recommend? Is the 3.9 a decent long term durable motor, or would I be better off with the 4.7?

I live in Connecticut and currently my two vehicles (96 Dodge Ram Indy 500 FOR SALE!!! and 315hp 95 Eagle Talon) are just not practical for winter time driving around here.

Thanks for your help! Keep the site rockin out as well >)

Is this a Question?

Judging by your two other rides, I'd say you can appreciate some performance out of your ride. If that's the case.....how can you even pose the question? Of course the 4.7 will produce the best performance. I have no idea about the long term durability of the 4.7. I've only been driving mine for about 20 months and 31K miles. But you would be hard pressed to get a better compromise between performance and fuel mileage than the 4.7.

My vote is for the 4.7!

do yourself a favor and get the 4.7.
You will not regret it.
The 3.9 isn't bad, but considering they both get the same gas milage, why bother with the v6. I almost got the v6 and every time I accelerate to pass someone, etc...I am grateful I got the 8.

The 3.9 is a good engine. I loved my former Dak that had the 3.9/5 speed combo. But in my opinion it is a little burdened with the extra weight of 4X4, so I'd go with the 4.7....wait a minute...I did. Anyway, you'll pay more up front, but you'll gain usable performance and resale value while getting about the same gas mileage or only slightly less.

hey what's goin on. anyways i live in connecticut too if you let me know where you live in ct i have a 2001 v6 5sp with 16" alloys 255/65/16 tires the 3.55 axle and the whole nine it's a regular cab shortbed but if you wanted i could let you check it out. I like my v6 but i wouldn't get it with a CC or QC truck though, with the reg cab it's fine. Mine has alot of balls and it can still pull everything i need it too like my boat and camper with no problems what so ever. My friend has a dakota motorsports truck with the 4.7 and it's the same setup as mine and it's fast but it just doesn't seem to have as much torque as the old 318 does, my v6 feels like it has more torque. Ultimately you'd have to drive both and see which you like better neither are race cars but they serve there purpose well. E-mail me anytime and let me know where in ct your from and maybe i can arrange for you to check it out.

Hey, thanks for the reply's everyone. Overall, I know everything I want on the truck, the only thing that's holding me back from purchasing it is the motor and which one I'm going to go with. However, you guys have made some really good points about the 4.7....and the 3.9 as well :)

I guess what it is going to come down too is the performance issue. I think that the v6 in a Regular Cab configuration might suit me well. However, I do worry about a six carrying around that extra weight. And the 4.7 should be a blast to drive. Oh well, time will tell. Maybe I'll just flip a coin :).

BTW: Jay, Check your e-mail, I'll be sending you some info.
