What is the difference between a generation 2 thermostat and a high-flow thermostat. I just bought the gen 2 one at autozone, but is this the right one.

Are you referring to the Robert Shaw Gen II's? If so, Im pretty sure the difference is that when the thermostat does fail it pops into its open position(rather than sticking closed) allowing you to make it where ever your going without overheating and becomming stranded somewhere.
