What gives , first I put in a Dynomax super turbo cat back ... no problem ,nice sound.
Then I installed a set of JBA Headers , again ..no
problems makes Dynomax sound more like a V-8, more
speed in Mid and top ends.
Now I just blew out the converter , I think ,
sorta sounds like a playing card in a kids bycicle
spokes ,rattles. So I've now got to replace that,
while I'm at it just might as well replace the "Y"
pipe. "Jeeze"
Anyone know a good place thats sells both high flow cats and "Y" pipes for a '99 3.9L V-6? Does
JBA sell "Y" Pipes for their headers for the 3.9?

Me too, I'm on my third.
This has to be a 3.9 thing, engines running too hot...I've been advised to check my 02 sensors.

No, just the stock ones... still covered by emissions warranty fortunately.I still need to get it checked out though, it might indicate something more serious if it's running hot enough to keep blowing the ceramic like that. I don't want to spend money on a high-flow cat unless there are significant gains, not if it's going to blow - Chrysler can keep paying for it.

I have 77000 on my 98 V6 Dakota and I am on number 6! I have asked dodge why they keep going out and they told me it is because they are too close to the back of the transmission and it is getting way to hot!

They actually said that? My dealership refused to acknowledged that it was the cat at all the first time and wanted to replace my exhaust... they are either really slick or REALLY stupid. My third cat went at around 79,000 kms. If this is a design flaw - shouldn't Chrysler pay for it to be rectified? Can the cat be moved further down the exhaust? Is the placement any different for the 3.9 than the other models? As far as I know, and I have talked to people on both this forum and the lemon tree - it is just the 3.9 that this keeps happening to. I posted this before, and the advice I got (from guys who sounded like they knew what they were talking about) was that the fuel mix was off - an engine running too hot can cause your cat to blow. This could be due to the O2 sensors not working. I haven't gotten around to getting it checked yet, but as soon as I do I'll let you guys know the outcome.

From what I understand is that the cat on the V8's are farther back than they are on the V6's. (Hence the heat problems.) Every V6 owner that I have talked to about this problem gen 2 or gen 3 dakotas have all had the same problem.

Just what I need! I only have 17,000 on mine so that buys me sometime. I'll keep that in mind when I put in a highflow cat.

Yeah, let Chrysler pay until the emission warranty is up - then go for a high-flow.
I'm wondering - if the heat source is coming from the cat's location, could it be insulated or shielded?
I'm thinking that when I get my exhaust replaced (I want to go to a local custom guy & get stainless) maybe I will see if he can change the cat placement.

Gen 1 Converters are ok, but they are extremely restrictive. High performance cats are the only way to go!

im on cat number 4 with only 30k miles. so its not just a v6 problem. dodge will blame anything for the problem they can, except find the cause. however mine starts to smell like rotten eggs, then advancing to poor performance and declineing gas milage. never any rattling. they tell me that it is the gas- that i should use a high octane, then when i try high octane they tell me its because i use high octane. if possible take any mods off before going in for service. i have had to go to 4 different dealers to get them fixed because they are sick of seeing me. im ready to have it diappear from the mall and burned to a crisp. i wouldn't feel right selling it to someone, i feel like a ?????? dodge dealer!

Isn't it funny how many problems are diagnosed at donut shop drive-throughs? I first noticed my cat rattling while waiting on a large double-cream, and the tinging of my timing chain the same way... thought it was an intriguing coincidence, until I realized that the only time I turn my stereo off is to order!

Ok guys heres the deal. The monolith inside the cat is wrapped in a stainless mat to keep it from rattling. They are made cheap and fall apart, and hence the monolith starts to rattle against the outer shell. Think about it, if DC can save 50 cents per truck by putting on a cheaper cat, the stock holders will get a larger dividend check next quarter. Also, location does not affect longevity. The new 4.7 has a cat directly below each exhaust manifold, and I have not heard of any failures on them. All the manufacturers are putting the cats closer to the engine so they will "light" quicker, giving lower emissions at cold start. Factory warranty should be 80,000 miles on the cat. After that, buy a Random Technology, they are the best high flow cat made.

I checked out random, didnt see one for the v6 though.does anybody know for sure about the warranty,is it 80,00,or 8 years,or which ever comes first?I think my plan is to wait for the cat to fall apart again, have dodge put in another one, take it off, while the bolts are all still nice n clean, and pop in a high flow cat.----cant help but think about what the shareholders are thinking everytime they have to warranty another cat.Glad i'm not one of em.

I have a 96 3.9 sport and just after I had everything the way I like it the converter goes and they tell me its gonna cost nearly 1000 bucks so I cleaned it out instead. It boosted the horse but made it a bit louder.

P.S. - Only do this if your state does'nt have inspections because you will never get it inspected like that.

money tree maybe the reason your cat went out is because you were running rich because u had a bad O2 sensor that is due to be changed around every 45K-50K miles routine, if you checked for codes then you would know ahead of time that one was bad and your cat would have been saved...i am 18 and ive been working on cars with my grandpa since if waz 12, mostly mopars and chevys...i too ruined a cat on my 3.9 because i didnt do the maintanence...believe it or not, i do know something about motors...
