While shopping for an intake I noticed one web site stated not emmisions legal? I did not think the intake effected the emmisions. Can someone shed some light.

Any modification to an engine is considered a potential 'bad thing' for emissions equipment in many states. If an engine component has been obviously changed, it can cause the IM tester to flunk the truck. If the manufacturer of the intake gets the CARB approval ( California Air Resources Board ) sticker, most states smog stations will allow the modification and not fail the truck.
"Exempted parts are add-on or modified parts that have undergone an CARB engineering evaluation. If the part or modification is shown to not increase vehicle emissions, it is granted an exemption to emission control system anti-tampering laws. This exemption is called an Executive Order (EO) and allows the modification to be installed on specific emission controlled vehicles. Every Executive Order part or modification has an assigned number that can be verified by Smog Check stations, BAR Referee stations, or by the CARB."
Bottom line - an intake with the CARB sticker is often the best idea. Do a search here to find out which parts/makers are CARB exempt:

Thanks for the input. I live in Ontario Canada we have to have emmision test every 2 years I'm thinking of getting an airraid intake for my 97 3.9L but don't want to spend 300 bucks Canadian if its going to fail the emmision test. Any one have there truck tested with a new intake?

Hey Rob, When I have to go for the Drive Clean, I'm switching my intake system back to stock. I wouldn't want to take I chance of failing. I built my own intake which comes apart very fast, so for me it takes less than 20 minutes to go back to stock form.

I just came to the same conclusion - I've been doing the research on intakes, and will hang on to my stock for my Drive Clean in December.

Rob - do they make an air raid for the 3.9? Everything that I've looked at needs at least some modification in which case it almost makes sense to go home made. (I've got various plans & pics for that too). All the big name intakes I've looked at have a different TB fitting... is the air raid any different?

I have a 99 Dak 5.2 ... I was told that i should get a M1 intake since i have to replace mine anyway .... what do you all think ?

Not familiar with the M1. Re: Air Raid, yes they do make them for the 3.9 (#300-107) for $174.99 U.S.
Here is another home made intake, this one using the existing TB hat, which works for the 3.9

It's not mine, just something I came across while searching. It's the only one that I've found for the 3.9, most of them have the vertical fitting on the TB. I'm wondering how effective it would be - as well as the conical K&B, wouldn't the hat also contain a drop-in? Or is it empty and just left there for ease of attachment.

Are those homemade intakes really "just as good" as the aftermarket K&N ones?
I noticed that the K&N has some kind of panel/shield near the filter which they claim keeps the cool air coming in from heating up with the air already in the engine. Is this a true statement?
I just wanna know before for I try to get into one of these. Thanks for any assistance.

Brian, the M1 is the Mopar performance intake manifold for the Magnums, not the filter/tubing assembly most guys call an "intake". You'll have to remove your standard beerbarrel intake manifold to install the M1 ( there are both 2bbl and a 4bb versions ), and it will not pass a visual emissions test. But it makes a lot more power than a simple air filter change! :)

Hey Darkfury, your talking about a heat shield which blocks out the hot air that the engine creates. A well designed heat shield will keep the hot air from your exhaust headers and also the blowing hot air from your fan out of your filter. Which means cooler air creates more power and also a cleaner filter.
The problem I'm having is the K&N filter is getting dirty pretty fast without a heat shield. The fan spits all the dirt and crap right onto the filter. I'm going to build mine soon, I keep on delaying it too busy.

I'm going to build it out of 1/16" metal or aluminum sheet, and design it like K&N's heat shield.

He made his out of fiberglass and carbon fiber... pretty sweet if you ask me....
