Subject: 3923's & 4.7L IP: Logged
Message: Taking the truck for the 30,000 check up tomorrow and was wondering since they are changing the sparks, should go and get some 3923's and have them put them in or should i just stick with what they put in. Is there an improvement with the 3923's and what gap should I use if i decide to do it myself. Ive read some of the other posts but they were from a while back. Any changes?
Thanks

Message: You should be able to find Autolite 3923's at your nearest Advance Auto Parts or Pep Boys. They shouldn't cost you more than $0.79. 8 of those shouldn't break your wallet.
They aren't going to increase performance. They will however decrease ping.
They are a royal PITA to install. There's one underneath some coolant pipes. They get real hot! So make sure that you give your engine sufficient time to cool off before you start changing plugs.
I switched over to 3923's @ 20,000 miles. My engine is pinging a whole lot less and still using 87 octane fuel.
You could also solve the ping problem by using 89 or 92 octane fuel. Ga$ is too expensive and my 4.7L absorbs it like it's going out of style. I figured I could spend a few hours to change plugs and about $6.40 was a worthwhile investment.

Message: oh, I also forgot to answer your question regarding how to gap your plugs. My 4.7L says to gap them at 0.040. It's printed under your hood in the lower right corner. Check it out!
I believe yours should be the same.

Message: I think you should only increase the gap if you are using an ignition system such as MSD, or my favorite, Jacobs.
