Having spent two years in Germany during the late 70's, I can attest to the attentiveness, and superior road manners of German drivers, at least, back then.

There were never any "left lane bandits", that is, people crusing the left lane at a lower speed and refusing to move over, and, every driver I encountered had a better sense of judgement the their American counterparts when it came to passing, following, etc.

Most accidents on the Autobahns in those days occured due to sudden fog. I'm sure Lynn can tell you how everthing is hunky-dory one moment, then, you encounter a fog bank on a bridge over a river, and visibility drops to a few yards...on a sunny day, no less!

I had a 1969 AMX 390 back then, with 3.15 gears, and a set of 225/60/15 Pirelli CN-36s on 15x7" AR Torque Thrust wheels. They were "H" speed rated, good for a sustained 130 mph.

That car would cruise at 120 mph @ 4800 RPM. It was capable of about 140 with those gears. Unfortunately, it had the aerodynamics of a Cessna 172 with flaps down. That's to say, the front end started floating at just over 120, making it unsafe to go any faster without the aid of a chin spoiler to keep the nose planted.

The duty type I referred to in my previous post took into account tire types and aerodynamics (tire speed rating from the factory depends on what the vehicle is used for).

DAHEMIKOTA,

I've had more dangerous things than geese fly out in front of my jets before. Try dodging a radar guided missile at 100 MPH in your Dakota. I guarantee you won't be able too. On the other hand, me at 1000 MPH in my jet can do so with relative ease. Well, it's not easy, but it's all reaction time and spotting the flaming telephone pole :)~ I just tend to have better reactions and read traffic (both air and ground) better than the average person can.

Demon Dakota...you mean your Dak isn't capable of a sustained 9 G's?

I can dodge SA-10's all day long with mine. You also should have checked off the chaff and flare dispensor option when you ordered your...it sounds as if you did not.

Lynn...this guy didn't know about the "Special Counter-Measures package"...OH NO!

The only gripe I have with mine is having to wipe exhaust residue off the door panels every time I launch an AMRAAM or heater at some left lane bandit. Also, the gunport gets really messy, not to mention the local constabulary is upset with me leaving 20mm hulls and belt debris all over the place when I decide to bring the M61 into play.

One more thing, Demon Dakota, do you find it hard fighting in the verticle with your Dak? Mine bleeds off airspeed really bad!

I've found that the major problem with drivers is that alot see it as something that "just happens". I see two basic sets of drivers on the road: proactive and reactive.

A proactive driver has a good understanding of what thier vehicle is capable of, is looking as far ahead as they can see, and isn't just looking at the brake lights of the car ahead of them, but is looking for traffic movement to give some insight on a hazard that they cannot see. They tend to drive with the mentality "sh1t happens, be ready to duck".

A reactive driver isn't looking for a problem, they'll deal with it when it comes. And usually they panic. They are more concerned about the insides and what is immediately infront of thier car than what's going on around or behind them. They tend to drive with the mentality "If I stay in my lane the sh1t won't hit me".

If you're in a group of proactive drivers, you know it. Everyone's moving at a good pace and driving is almost effortless. Close calls just don't happen and courtousy is dished out in spades. When you're in a group of reactive drivers you also know it. Although the speed is typically lower the stress level is high and courtousy got lost in the translation. When you're in a group of mixed (which happens most often), traffic tieups happen as the proactive drivers end up spending most of thier thought trying to predict the reactive drivers. Though it's still better than only reactive drivers.

There is very rarely any grey area.

Demon,

Here in Houston TX.,

It's about 90+% reactive types, a real pain in the ass to drive in the city/highways here.

Todd: that's the same pretty much everywhere near any urban area in the US. When you get away from the urban areas drivers tend to get better. In mountain areas the local drivers tend to be forced into being proactive. The ones that don't improve are the ones who you tend to read about in the news paper and accident reports. (ie: car rolled down one of the 500' embankments that thrive in the Sierra Nevadas)

Todd,

Being a veteran, I have had the opportunity to live in many different parts of the US. Of everywhere I have lived, Texas seemed to have the most courteous drivers I had ever seen.

While moving to Texas, from California, I wasn't in the state but 20 minutes and came up on a slow moving car on a 2 lane road. Now, I was in a U-Haul, so I wasn't very happy because I knew couldn't pass worth a crap. Out of nowhere, the car runs off the road onto the shoulder and keeps driving the same speed. I was shocked. I had no idea what he was doing. After following it for another mile or so, with him being on the shoulder doing a good 50mph, I passed him. I looked back after passing him and he pulled back onto the road.

I can't count all of the times people did this to let me pass in my brief 6 month stay there. This happens everyday in Texas. People will run off the road to let you pass. Name another place that does this. I sure haven't been there.

Best overall driving: Texas
Worst overall driving: Georgia
People slamming on brakes for no reason at all at 75mph: California

cryppie

cryppie,Demon, you're both so right.

People here in Texas, mostly small rural areas, are VERY courteous drivers. Used to be, maybe still is, in the country, everyone waves, in their cab, at oncoming traffic on 2 lane roads, whether they know you or not!

I was referring to IN the city of Houston, and probably is about the same as any other other large city-terrible. Houston is 4th largest.
