Can anyone help me with this: I have a '98 Dakota Sport with the 5.2L engine. When I first start the truck up it idles VERY fast, the goes down to the 1000 RPM range (still too high) and doesn;t want to idle down any further. I then have to "clunk" it into drive. When I get to my destination and put it in park, it again idles too high. It is even worse if I have been running my air conditioning. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

Could this be the Throttle Position Sensor?

I would be looking for a vaccume leak, any hoses off caps missing, check the throttle body gasket, and intake gasket if no vac. leak then clean the throttle body, there are lots of strange problems with carbon built up on throttle body. Any thing else you will need a scanner tool, DRB III. Oh, is there a check engine light on?

I thought that this might be the TPS also becuase in some previous posts someone had mentioned similiar problems to mine as well as thier cruise control acting up. My cruise control seems to "buck" when I'm using it. The other poster mentioned that thier cruise was working fine after replacing the TPS....

Usually but not always a TPS will turn on the check engine light. The only way to determine if it is a TPS is to watch the voltage while the truck is acting up, difficult to do without a scanner. Minimum TPS volts should be around .75 sorry I can't help more from here. might be easier to take to a dealer.

Has the truck died on you after starting the motor?

No, it has never died on me. Just a high idle.

Really sounds like a vacuum leak or IAC stuck open. Any hint of spark knock under load?

No hint of spark knock. They weird thing is that it has gotten a lot better in the last few days. But I have also not been running my air in the past week as it has cooled off quite a bit here. (iowa)
