Subject: Trans Rebuild??? IP: Logged
Message: I need to rebuild the auto trans in my '97 Dakota. Any suggestions on performance parts for it? I already plan on putting in the MOPAR convertor from KRC but am wondering about other parts (bands, cluth pack, etc.)

Message: First of all, why do you need to rebuild it? Also, what type of driving do you do? How many miles?

Message: I believe I blew the rear seal. I have first gear lock up. I put in the Trans-Go kit and then the trans started to act up. It's a daily driver basically with performance mods. About 27,000 miles. Out of warranty though (3/36000).

Message: What do you mean first gear lock up? It doesn't move in first gear? I would check the fluid level and condition, is it nice and red or brown and burnt smelling. If it is burnt and brown, it probably has been heated badly and needs a rebuild. I usulally take off the pan and see if it has alot of metal and clutch material in it. Also look at the band adjustment if it is really off band material is probablly gone. These transmissions are bad for having the O/D go and sometimes taking lots else with it but yours is very low milage and if not driven really hard should live that long easily.

Message: When the gear select is in manual low, the truck will not move. When in drive, the truck has a very sluggish start. It feels like a manual 2nd gear start. Fluid is burnt smelling, brown and has the clutch material in it. Band adjustment looks good. I don't know if I'm a hard driver, but there is something defintely wrong. I bought this truck brand new and, in my opinion, should have left it stock. Lot less troubles and worries. I know the trans needs the rebuild, so while I'm there, I would like to know if there are some high perf parts I can put in to help.

Message: Use Kevlar high friction, clutchs and fresh steels, you will also want a kevlar band and a new pump. I realy do not know dodge transmissions very well. I have routinely put alison torque converter on GM trans missions that are used for heavy towing. You might want to find out if there is a heavy duty OEM T/C for your transmission as wheel as a good coler. I would fill your new transmission with Amsoil, Redline or Neo-Oil synthetic transmission fluid.

Message: Hello???? Nobody can help me?
I thought this was the place to get answers for Dakota's? I thought this was a common Dodge problem and no one knows of some parts to fix it?
