Message: Can the '01 4.7 still pass emissions with out the two pre-cats? Dodge put them on there only for Calfornia and to become a Low Emissions Vehicle (LEV) and satisfy the gov. that Dodge was doing something for the envronment. If you can rip out those cats (withou being sent to emissions hell), now that would open the potential for some serious exhaust mods.

P.S. Just a thought-a 3800 lbs. V-8 truck that does O-60 under 7 seconds and is rated as a LEV! A guy doesn't even have the option of sucking the tail pipe-no carbon monoxide!

Message: Removing those cat's would be a biatch. There is an emissions sensor before and after both cats. They are apparently high flowing anyways. I plan on leaving my pre cats and continuing my 3" exaust right to the Y pipe eliminating the main cat. The main cat has no sensor before or after it on mine.I will replace it for emissions testing every 2 years. 3" right from the Y will be a great exaust system. I also want to leave at least some sort of cat on there just so I don't feel like I am killing the planet.

Message: Let me make sure I got this. It would be too much of a hassle to remove the precats. But, You can't get headers on with the pre cats on. And, you probobly couldn't pass an emissions test without the main cat. Do I want to spend $300+ on a high flow cat-NOPE. Which brings us back to the cat back systems-sheesh. And honestly, I'm not really sure that they are worth the $$$$. Which brings me back to my lowly '01 SLT RC 4.7 5-sp 3.92 LSD. What's a guy to do?
Your pal,
Dr.Q
P.S. I don't have a track with in 300 miles of me. Any I know you have the same set up. So let me know how your truck does before you mod the bajeezus out of it. Matt says with a little practice you should be able to pull 14.8 all day long. Good luck with the shiftin'

Message: I have a 5.2L 99' and put Jba headers on about three or four weeks ago while the promotional sale was going on. I payed three something for them. Awesome! Gained a huge amount of torque from them. I would pay $400 for them any day!

Message: Dr Q I am heading back to the track tommorow if the weather is good. I figure I should be able to gain almost a second. I was shifting ouside of the power band as well as slipping and grinding. BTW It's said that headers are showing virtually no gain whatsoever for the 4.7. the stock manifolds apparently breath very well.
the problem isn't moving the pre cats either Q. the problem is all the sensors that are position before and after the cat's. Having the wires reading the same will confuse the computer for it will tell it that the cat's aren't working for the emission before and after will read the same. If you haven't done so allready cold air intake is the most efective mod for the cost.

Message: I am running the Borla stainless headers on my 2001 4.7L. I don't think they added much more that about 9HP in performance. I also have a Flowmaster Force II cat-back 3" system. That did improve my performance and I gained about 1mpg on the highway.
All 2001 and up vehicles have to conform to California emissions. I bought my truck 15 miles from where it was built at the Mound Rd assembly plant near Detroit and it has 3 cats. All 2001's also have vapor canisters on your fuels tanks. Thats why you can't pump that extra $.50 worth of gas in without it going all over the side of your truck or remove the fuel cap while the truck is running without tripping a MIL.
You can remove the pre-cats, but you have to replace the rear 2 O2 sensors with "KatBox" devices from www.krcperformance.com. It tricks the PCM into thinking the pre-cats are functioning normally.
I think there are better mods than the headers since the factory manifolds are a pretty good design. I would recommend a cat-back system though.

Message: I bet a dyno will show mabye 2-3 HP for your headers. There was a guy on this board or another and that's all it showed for a gain. Apparently even a cat back doesn't add much more than 5 HP. The cold air inatke will proabably give you 9 HP however. It's not like the old days where a few mod's got you going real fast. Cost big coin on these engines and that is why so many people drive dime a dozen 5.0 stangs. Only 2 Dakota's last time at the track and over 200 showed up along with about 50 stangs and 30 late model Camaro's.

Message: Crazy Eric? Hell no!! Uniquie, hell yes. People get excited seeing Dakota's running as fast as some of the Stangs. When they see a Stang run 13's or 14's nobody even cares. If a Dakota runs 14's jaws often drop out of there mouths. Imagine the respect and attention when you throw on a SC and run mid 13's. Everyone appreciates that way more for they realize the money spent to do that is quite alot compared to your millions of Mustangs at the track. Besides we sure look a hell of a lot nicer than them to start with.

Message: You can easily remove the cats by the manifold by buying a Y-pipe for the 2000 dakota with a 4.7L. Chrysler put on three cats in 2001, then to make up for the power loss they put on a 68mm throttle body instesd of the 65mm TB that is on the 2000 4.7.

Message: i had an '02 4.7 and i put the JBA firecone headers on. the only problems i ran into was when installing the headers the precats got in the way of the headers lining up right. so i had to cut the precats off, install the headers, and then drive to the mufflers shop with open headers (FUN) to get my precats welded back into place. as far as performance goes, i deleted the third cat at the same time and i noticed a longer shift pattern up in the higher rpms and seems to have a bit more torque as well.
